❤️You come for the skiing. You stay for everything else. ❤️
Ask anyone who’s been part of Strathcona Nordic Ski Club for a few years what makes it special, and chances are they won’t just talk about the skiing. They’ll talk about the friendships made on the trails. The early mornings at Mount Washington. The hot chocolate after a cold day. The laughter, the encouragement, the celebrations, and the familiar faces that make a winter day feel like coming home.
They’ll talk about kids who started out barely able to stand on skis and are now flying down the trails with their friends. Parents who signed up to help out and discovered a whole new community of their own.

Because somewhere along the way, a ski program becomes something bigger. It’s a community. It’s a winter tradition. It’s a place to belong.

Whether you’re four or eighty-four, brand new to skiing or someone who’s been gliding along for decades, there’s a place for you at SNSC.

And we’d love to have you be part of it. 💚
📅 Registration opens October 15!

❄️NORDIC SKIING IS FOR EVERYONE!
Spotlight on ParaNordic at SNSC ❄️

There’s more than one way to enjoy cross-country skiing, and we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the freedom, fun, and adventure of being out on the snow!

ParaNordic skiing makes cross-country skiing accessible to people with a wide range of varying abilities. Whether skiing standing or seated using specialized equipment, there are opportunities to get involved from recreational skiing and trying something new to training and competition. Here’s how you can get involved:

❄️Adaptive Skiing: Specialized equipment and techniques help people with different abilities experience Nordic skiing, including seated skiing using sit skis.

🤝 Instruction & Support: Through our partnership with the Vancouver Island Society for Adaptive Snowsports (VISAS), participants can explore opportunities for specialized instruction and support.

❄️ Give It a Try: VISAS initiatives, including Have-A-Go opportunities and the Snowsports Festival, help introduce more people to adaptive skiing in a welcoming environment.

🏅 Room to Grow: Whether your goal is to enjoy the outdoors, build confidence on skis, or explore competitive ParaNordic skiing, there are opportunities to develop your skills.

At SNSC, we believe Nordic skiing should be a sport for everyone. Different abilities, different goals, but the same opportunity to enjoy everything that makes skiing on Mount Washington so special.

Curious about ParaNordic skiing for yourself, a friend, or a family member? We’d love to help you explore the possibilities!

🏔️ MARMOT WATCH — Part 5 of 6: The whole pathway, one picture.

Where does your skier fit?

SNSC programs follow Nordiq Canada’s Long-Term Athlete Development pathway — an age- and stage-appropriate progression from a child’s first time on skis through skill development, competition and lifelong participation.

But there isn’t one “right” way through it.

Some kids want to race. Some want to train with their friends. Some simply love being outside on skis. Our job is to give them a place to keep skiing, developing and having fun and the opportunity to choose where the sport takes them.

🐰 Ages 4–5 · BUNNYRABBIT
First adventures on skis, with a parent alongside.

❄️Ages 6–9 · JACKRABBIT L1–4
Building skills, confidence and a love of being on snow.

🏔️ Ages 9–13 · MARMOT L5
The next step after Jackrabbits — more skills, more adventure and optional racing.

🏔️ Ages 9–13 · MARMOT L6
More training, more days on snow and a stronger racing focus, with year-round opportunities. Formerly called Devo.

🏁 Ages 12–18 · JUNIOR RACING
For athletes who want to chase it — Coast Cups, BC Cups, NorAms, Westerns and Nationals.

🔥 Ages 19+ · LEARN TO LOPPET + MASTERS RACE
Because the pathway doesn’t actually end.

The goal isn’t to push every skier toward racing. It’s to help every skier find their next step — whether that means a start line, a lifelong love of Nordic skiing, or simply Sunday mornings on the trails with friends.

There’s a place for all of it at Strathcona.

📅 Registration opens October 15.

Some of our favourite members have never registered for a single program.

They’re the early-morning skiers. The couples who’ve spent winter after winter exploring the trails together. The volunteers who help year after year, time races or pour hot chocolate and then head out on the trails simply because they love to ski.

Being part of the Strathcona Nordic Ski Club doesn’t have to mean joining a program or lining up for a race. Sometimes it just means being part of a community that loves 55 km of groomed Nordic trails, winter on Vancouver Island, and getting outside. ❄️

And your membership comes with some pretty great perks too. SNSC members have access to discounts with local partners and Nordic brands, including Ski Tak Hut, Rundle Nordic, KV+, ZIZU Optics, SkiWax.ca, Kal Tire, NordiqPlus+ and more. There’s also a 10% discount at the Raven Lodge Store at Mount Washington.

Membership also connects you to year-round club activities without having to register for a program.

So if you’ve been skiing our trails for years but haven’t joined the club yet, maybe this is your year.

SNSC membership opens October 15.
Come for the trails. Stay for the community. And enjoy a few perks along the way. 💙

JUNIOR RACING · Ages 12–18
For young athletes who want to see how far they can go.
Junior Racing is SNSC’s year-round competitive development program, combining roller skiing, dryland training and on-snow development with opportunities to race locally, provincially and nationally.

🏃 Fall: Dryland and roller skiing
❄️ Winter: Tuesday & Thursday late afternoons + Saturday & Sunday mornings
☀️ Summer: Tuesday & Thursday + weekend sessions
❄️Racing: Coast Cup · BC Cup Series · NorAms · Western Canadians · Nationals

Full- and part-time options are available.

Junior Racing is about more than results. We see competition as a chance for athletes to learn how to prepare, race with intention, support their teammates, give their best effort and reflect on what they’ve learned. The medals and results are exciting. The athlete you become along the way matters even more.

Registration opens October 15.

⚡ Want to go faster this winter?
MASTERS RACE · Ages 19+
Masters Race is for adult skiers who want to train, improve and maybe test themselves on a start line all in a keen, friendly group.

You’ll work on both classic and skate technique, follow a structured training plan, and train with SNSC Head Coach Bertrand Hamoumraoui throughout the season.

🍂 Dryland · October–November
Trail running, hiking, roller skiing and ski striding get things rolling before the snow arrives.

❄️ On snow · December–March

Regular coached sessions continue through the winter, building fitness, technique and race readiness.

🏁 Want to race?
There are opportunities throughout the season, including the BC Cup Series, Vancouver Island Loppet, Tour de Strathcona and P’ayakentsut.

You don’t have to be the fastest skier out there. You just need to enjoy training, improving and occasionally seeing how fast you can go.

Registration opens October 15.

MARMOTS RUNNING FOR MARMOTS 🏔️
There were plenty of familiar SNSC faces on the trails at Mount Washington last weekend for the first-ever Monster Marmot Trail Run!

Our athletes traded skis and rollerskis for running shoes and took on the 5K and 10K courses across some pretty challenging mountain terrain. More importantly, it was a great community event supporting a species that’s pretty close to our hearts here on Vancouver Island, the Vancouver Island marmot.

The event raised an incredible $9,000 for the Marmot Recovery Foundation, helping support the ongoing recovery and return of marmots to the wild.

We loved seeing so many SNSC athletes, families and friends out there training, racing, smiling and enjoying our home mountain in a completely different season.

Turns out our Marmots are pretty good without snow too. ❄️🏃
Big thanks to Mount Washington Alpine Resort and everyone involved in putting on such a fun event and congratulations to everyone who took on the Monster!
