The Ministry of Education is responsible for Aboriginal Education in the BC public school system kindergarten to grade 12.

Our vision for Indigenous students is to have a balance between academic performance and Indigenous culture and identity that will foster the value of life long learning. Through the Learning Division, Aboriginal Education, the Ministry is committed to working with education partners, school districts and Aboriginal communities to improve Aboriginal student success.

On April 12, 2026, the Kumugwe Cultural Society and Dancers will gather in the Big House to recognize 150 years of the Indian Act, first passed in 1876—a law that continues to shape the relationship between Canada and Indigenous Peoples.

This gathering is an opportunity to come together in a good way—to witness songs and dances, to reflect on the history and ongoing impacts, and to honour the strength, resilience, and living cultures of Indigenous Peoples.

This is a free public event. Everyone is welcome to attend, to listen, and to learn.

Seating is limited, so please come early.

Doors open at 2 p.m., with a start time of 3 p.m.

We invite you to come and be part of this meaningful gathering.

Gilakas’la — thank you.

We are holding the Tumbler Ridge community in our thoughts following yesterday’s tragic loss of life.

The impact of devastating events like this can be felt deeply by students, staff, and families. Our schools remain caring, supportive spaces, and help is available for any student who may need it.

Families can find guidance and support resources here: https://www.comoxvalleyschools.ca/message-of-support-for-our-school-community/
