Today’s small-act-of-caring moment is this bag of apples donated to me to make dried apple snacks for my students this year. I just happened to pass a young woman who had volunteered to collect them with the Lush Valley non-profit organization and she was looking for someone to give them to on her way home.

This weekend I met up with a friend I haven’t seen in 22 years. We visited Avatar Grove, an ancient forest on the south-western tip of Vancouver Island. When we reached our destination - Canada’s knarliest tree - my friend said, “Let’s get a photo of you by this tree in Canada's knarliest t-shirt.” Thanks friend, I had forgotten how funny you are.

This morning I was reminded of this small-act-of-caring moment and since I haven’t shared it here, thought I would.

An orca whale appeared in a “pandemic” dream I had back in the first days of sheltering at home. I was sitting on a narrow strip of dock with my legs dangling in the sea when the orca came out of the water and placed its head on my shoulder and spoke these words to me: Everything is going to be okay.

The very talented, very thoughtful, and very generous Mel Varney of painted these beautiful rocks for me. Thank you so much, Mel. And thank-you to orca for showing up in my sleep. ;)

Coincidentally, Small Acts of Caring is carrying Alena’s orca pin in its online shop. The orcas need caring for, too.

Beautiful day. I hope you find time for a bit of self-care today.

I have been thinking a lot about face masks and face coverings lately. I keep reading how we are all in different boats, but the same storm. If this is the analogy, it seems to me that face masks are our life vests. If we wear them and follow the recommendations for wearing them, it will ease the burden of the pandemic on all. It will help calm the storm. A small act of caring has an endless ripple.

A friend on Facebook posted that she had a bumper crop of plums and invited all of her friends to help themselves, if they wanted.

And the first of our handmade, screen-printed posters are up. Please message me if you would like to get one, too.

These two loving children wanted to be part of the DBH shirt project and came up with the idea to decorate the shipping bags.
