Tomorrow is Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Also known as Orange Shirt Day, September 30th is one day, amongst many, for remembering and reflection. Between 1867 and 1996, federally-run residential schools were responsible for the forcible separation of Indigenous children from their families and communities. Many of these children were harmed. Many of these children died. Reconciliation requires us to acknowledge the historical and ongoing impacts of colonization on Indigenous Peoples in Canada. Every child matters.

The Office of Global Engagement encourages international students to consider what it means to truly indigenize our places of learning. If you can, a good place to start is by participating in one of the community walks taking place in our campus communities on September 30th. CV: Spirit walk from Lewis Park at 10am. CR: Remembrance walk from Spirit Square at 11am. PA: Walk from Maht Mahs gym at 10am.

International alum Abin Tom Sebastian graduated from NIC’s Communication Design Diploma in 2025. He used his capstone project to develop key design elements for his book ‘Morbid Kuriosity’s Strange and Unexplained Incidents’, published this year by Schiffer Publishing in Pennsylvania. During his studies, Abin Tom researched his target audience, created the cover, illustrations, typesetting, and marketing for this gripping read.

Abin Tom credits NIC for helping him along his path, including the Office of Global Engagement for helping him adjust to life in Canada, the NIC Foundation for financial awards, library staff for research assistance, and his instructors. “They actually care for the student. It’s not superficial,” Abin Tom said.

Happy International Women’s Day!

We asked our international students at North Island College to share about a woman who inspires them for International Women’s Day. Diana’s video was our first-place winner.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful message with us Diana.
