Hi! My name is Krystle Dallas Rose Kasulo and I’m currently an educator in the infant program at Sunrise and Shine Childcare Centre. I have worked in the preschool and toddler programs as well. As a result, I have had the privilege of getting to know our amazing families. I am currently working on a project to support a Preschool and hopefully some other schools in Malawi, Africa, Machinga District. I have been going to this particular village since 2014. It holds a special place in my heart as my husband is also from there. As a matter of fact, after a long two years he has finally been able to book his ticket and he will be heading back home to the village later this month. It is our goal to be able to carry some quality items back to the preschool along with warm greetings from Sunrise and Shine Daycare and our families.
My Story
In 2015 I walked into a small 8 foot by 8-foot cement room. There were three open walls and one closed wall. The light was streaming in from the morning light and in front of me were over 30 young children. The children were Sitting in yellow and black uniforms their parents had managed to make using what little money they had. Uniforms are a requirement of all public schools and come at the cost of the families. This is the place children go to until they are old enough for public school. The requirement to enter public school is not dependent upon age but, if the child can reach the other side of their shoulder with their arm. For example, if you take your left arm and have it go over your head and reach your right shoulder. This would be the only acceptable physical sign you were ready to start school. The children that can do this are usually the age of 5 or 6. This is arguably a long time to wait and can delay a child’s potential to learn. As recent neurological research has shown the first three years are critical.
To meet this challenge in a country with close to 19 million people and most living in extreme poverty, the local parents take it upon themselves to provide a place for their young children to learn. The volunteers receive no salary or supplies from the government. In an effort to let every child know they matter, my husband will be traveling to this community’s preschool once again. While there he will be visiting the preschool and local schools, in an effort to motivate the children, hear their stories and share his own. While there he hopes to be able to share some needed supplies with these children.
