A huge congratulations to Joël on receiving the Roberta Thomas Legacy Award!

We’re so grateful to have Joël as part of The Corner Brook Dance Hub team, and to witness the creativity and passion they bring to their work and to our dancers. Well deserved! 🤍

We are so excited to introduce our 2026 Roberta Thomas Legacy Award Recipient: Joël Azevedo ()

Joël is a contemporary dance artist based in Corner Brook, NL / ktaqmkuk. Their practice spans choreography and performance, dramaturgy and stage management, and more recently administration and producing. They lead with curiosity and love unknotting knots, whether fibrous, logistical or creative. Their practice is firmly rooted in contemporary dance and dance-theatre, but their research and training also includes forms like karaoke, zumba, social dance, and arts leadership - as well as being influenced by clowning and devising. Joël gravitates toward collaborative and community-engaged processes.

This 2026 Roberta Thomas Legacy Award supports the development of a template for “dancing autobiographies”; a creative framework inviting people to explore and communicate their stories, memories, pleasures, fears and hopes through movement. The project grows from Joël’s interest in dance as a form of communication beyond spoken language and their commitment to accessibility, collaboration and community engagement. The award will support initial research and development with collaborators in Corner Brook, NL.

Get to know Hilary, one of our talented teachers at Corner Brook Dance Hub! 🤍

Hilary Knee is a dance artist, choreographer, and dance instructor based in Corner Brook, NL, and has a diploma in contemporary dance from Dance Arts Institute (formerly The School of Toronto Dance Theatre). She studied pedagogy and anatomy as well as Graham, Limon, and Horton techniques, ballet, improvisation, composition, and clowning as part of her post-secondary education in dance.

As a dance instructor, Hilary values healthy teaching practices, positivity, curiosity, learning through dance, building new skills, encouraging confidence in the young dancers she teaches, as well as a strong technical foundation.

Hilary has enjoyed teaching full-time since returning home to NL in 2021, teaching in Corner Brook (Dance Studio West, Graham Academy), Deer Lake (Nomad Stages) and as part of Kittiwake Dance Theatre’s Summer Intensive faculty (2022, 2023). Hilary has experience instructing students ages 2 to adult in dance styles including ballet, contemporary, modern, jazz, pre pointe, creative movement, dance fitness, and more! Knee has experience teaching private, semi-private lessons, and group classes.

Join us for a fun and inspiring evening of dance theatre!

The evening begins with Jacinte Armstrong’s Found in Translation, an engaging, interactive dance piece structured like a game of broken telephone. Input your ideas into the machine and see what emerges when professional and student dancers work together in an exciting improvisation challenge!

The second half features a special showcase of short contemporary dances for Corner Brook audiences. You’ll see old favorites, remixes, and new experiments by Josh Murphy, Joël Azevedo, Candice Pike, and Julia Carr.

Performed by the choreographers, Corner Brook Dance Hub Dance Leaders, and some favourite local performers, this collection showcases an engaging mix of music and themes from memory to comedy to, um, airport security procedures?!

Get to know Joël, one of the familiar faces helping make things happen at Corner Brook Dance Hub!🤍

Joël began dancing around the age of 12 in Moncton NB, and eventually fell in love with it (after a few years of not really knowing what they were getting themself into). Growing up Joël studied ballet, tap, modern, jazz, and more before heading to Simon Fraser University to focus on contemporary dance performance. Now they work as a professional dance artist creating and performing works all over the country. At Corner Brook Dance Hub you might see their name on emails, or their face behind the front desk, in addition to inside the studio teaching.

Q: What is your favourite form of dance to teach/dance?

I started to really enjoy doing and teaching ballet during the pandemic. I love that every class follows a predictable structure and I can let go of all the other dramas of my day while I'm doing the barre. Even when it's slower or simpler, I can still work very hard because there are always little things to remember.
I also love trying new dances, there are so many different kinds! The last new style I tried was a South Indian dance form called Kuthu -- and I had a blast even though I didn't know if I was doing anything right.
