ICLD's work is grounded in healing, community connection, lifelong learning, and capacity building. We support programs that strengthen communication, leadership, personal growth, employment readiness, and community wellness while honouring culture, lived experience, and the strengths that already exist within each community.

Through hands-on learning, group discussions, presentations, outdoor activities, and collaborative exercises, participants are encouraged to build skills, gain confidence, and learn from one another. Our programs create opportunities for individuals to share perspectives, practice new skills, and develop meaningful connections that support both personal and professional growth.

Whether learning in the classroom, participating in group activities, or engaging in land- and community-based experiences, participants are supported in a respectful and inclusive environment where every voice is valued. Every program begins with listening, because meaningful solutions are developed with communities, not for communities.

World Indigenous Peoples Day 🧡

This Sunday, we recognize and celebrate Indigenous Peoples around the world, honouring the cultures, histories, knowledge, and contributions that continue to strengthen communities across generations.

At Beacon, our Indigenous logo reflects our commitment to building meaningful relationships with Indigenous peoples and communities, and to ongoing learning, reflection, and action. We are grateful to live, work, and serve on the traditional and unceded territories of the W̱SÁNEĆ people and the Lekwungen-speaking peoples of the Songhees and Kosapsum First Nations.

Indigenous teachings, perspectives, and ways of knowing are woven throughout many of Beacon's programs and services. Across the organization, we are privileged to serve many Indigenous community members, and in some programs, Indigenous participants represent more than half of those accessing services. These relationships continue to shape our understanding of how we can better support community through connection, respect, and collaboration.

We also recognize that reconciliation is not a destination. While we are proud of the work underway, there is still more to learn, more relationships to build, and more work to do.

Recently, Beacon's leadership team participated in a three-day learning journey with Indigenous Community for Leadership & Development. Thank you to Paula, Cyril, and Sara for sharing your knowledge, guiding meaningful conversations, and helping us deepen our understanding of how Indigenous teachings can continue to shape the way we lead, collaborate, and serve our communities.

On World Indigenous Peoples Day, we reaffirm our commitment to listening, learning, and moving forward together with humility, care, respect, and action.

At ICLD, learning extends beyond the classroom. Through visits from Fraser Health, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, SkilledTradesBC, CCPABC, and other community partners, participants gain valuable insights into health, financial literacy, career pathways, and workforce opportunities.

These conversations help participants explore new possibilities, build confidence, and connect with resources that support their personal and professional goals.

Many people carry experiences of trauma that can affect how they interact with services, workplaces, and communities. ICLD’s trauma-informed practice training helps participants build practical skills for creating safer, more respectful, and more supportive environments. Topics may include communication, emotional safety, de-escalation, boundaries, self-care, conflict management, and understanding the impacts of intergenerational trauma.

ICLD supports organizations in building respectful, culturally grounded engagement processes that prioritize listening, trust, reciprocity, protocol, consent, and accountability.
