On April 26, 2001 the Windsor Centre took possession of the old observatory at St. Clair College. A proposal to purchase the observatory had been in place for a year when the college announced an expansion to its technical wing and needed the space currently occupied by the observatory. Members of the centre were on hand to help remove the 2,000 pound steel and aluminum observatory from it's found

ation and with the help of a crane and flatbed trailer transported the dome to it's new home in Comber. The observatory had not been used since the lunar eclipse of August 1989 when 500 members of the public came to attend the event. After refurbishing the dome and telescope and adding a new telescope and mount. the club now regularly uses the site for nighttime observing for club members, the public, school children and other groups. Since moving the structure the RASC - Windsor Centre has built a new foundation for the observatory and named the observatory after our founder Cyril Hallam. Built a 10 x 20 foot warm room and through a generous donation from Advantage Engineering of Oldcastle we now have a 14 x 30 foot observing deck. The most recent addition to the observatory site is a Celestron 14 inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope mounted on a Paramount ME mount from Software Bisque. The Lee Telescope, named after long time member Henry Lee, was made possible by a grant from the Trillium Foundation. With the Lee Telescope installed we now have a state of the art facility to enhance our public education mandate. How to find us: The most direct route from Windsor is to take 401 East to Highway 77 South to South Middle Road and turn right (West). While on South Middle Road you will go about 1 kilometer and just after the point where Concession 9 joins it you will find the observatory site on the left side of the road (South). Unfortunately, observing at Point Pelee National Park's Dark Sky Night has been CANCELLED for this evening due to expected poor visibility and air quality as a result of smoke from forest fires in northern Ontario. See forecast map for 10 pm below... ...Please consider joining the Windsor Centre RASC for our next public stargazing event at Point Pelee National Park on Wednesday, August 12th for our annual Perseid Meteor Shower Watch Party. Beyond the lawnchair observing taking place on the West Beach that night, the Windsor Centre will also be providing an opportunity for safely viewing the grazing solar eclipse which is happening from about 12:30 to 2:00 pm (at the visitor centre) as well as audiovisual presentations in the visitor centre auditorium taking place from 2:30 pm until 9:00 pm. Astronomy, NOW! 👀 Mercury joins Venus and Jupiter in the early evening sky!

Venus and Jupiter are a magnificent sight soon after sunset in the west-northwestern sky throughout May, and are soon to be joined by Mercury.

From London on 23 May at 21:40 BST, about 40 minutes after sunset, Mercury lies just three degrees high. Across an uninterrupted north-western horizon free of hazy conditions a pair of binoculars may spot it.

During the last week of May Mercury climbs slowly, by the end of the month reaching an altitude of around seven degrees for the same degree of twilight.

See a rare DOUBLE SHADOW TRANSIT happen in Jupiter's cloud tops tonight (May 8th!) For more info, go to...
https://www.facebook.com/share/r/1AnNXmEiCN/ You'll need a small telescope to see this, but if you have the chance to view it, you'll be impressed watching the two solar eclipses happening simultaneously in Jupiter's cloud tops! The double shadow transit across Jupiter's disk will be in progress at as the sky darkens after sunset (both shadows appear as tiny dark disk against Jupiter's disk starting at 8:44 pm EDT). By shortly after 9 pm it should be dark enough to easily spot them through a telescope. However, don't wait too long to look for this rare event. The double shadow show will be over by 9:21 pm as Ganymede's shadow leave's Jupiter's disk on the western side. To find Jupiter in the western sky right after sunset, look high in the western sky. Jupiter will look like a star...the brightest one (and one of the first visible to your eye) there that you will see...good luck!

☄️Look up the next few mornings and you may see Comet C/2025 R3 (PanSTARRS)!
You’ll want to look up roughly 30-60 minutes before sunrise. In Indiana, look up roughly 5:45-6:45AM. You’ll see it in the eastern sky just a bit above the horizon.
It may be barely visible with the naked eye on a few of the upcoming clear mornings. It will be much easier to see with binoculars or a small telescope. You may be able to take a long-exposure picture of it too.
C/2025 R3 (PanSTARRS) is a long‑period comet diving into the inner solar system right now, likely on a ~170,000‑year orbit before it escapes on a hyperbolic trajectory. It reaches perihelion around April 19, then makes its closest pass by Earth about a week later.
Not factoring in clouds, the best mornings to see it may be April 19th- 21st. After that it gets really close to the rising sun.
It’s worth a look toward the east before sunrise on clear mornings the next handful of days!

Here's an invitation to join UWindsor astronomer Steven Pellarin and others excited about the recent Artemis Moon mission to enjoy a great meal and spend an evening to hear more about NASA's current plans to build a permanent human settlement at the Moon's South Pole! The Artemis program is NASA’s multi-phase initiative to return humans to the Moon, establish a sustainable presence, and prepare for future missions to Mars. But NASA is not doing this alone. This project is a collaborative effort bringing in expertise and technology from a number of space agencies, including the Canadian Space Agency. Please join us as we not only look at how far we've come in this human journey but also what we have to look forward to in coming missions. Why not join us before the presentation for a delicious northern Italian dinner! The Fogolar restaurant is open to all and will be serving a number of dinner specials on top of their excellent regular menu. Call the club office at 519-966-2230 for reservations. Tonight's sky—December 19th. Here's everything you can see with just your eyes. No equipment. No experience. Just you and the winter night. 🌌

December 19th offers one of the most spectacular casual astronomy nights of the year. Multiple planets visible, brilliant winter constellations, easy-to-find patterns, and dark skies (Moon is waning crescent, minimal interference). If you've been thinking about looking up, tonight is the night.

**What's visible and where to look:**

**JUPITER (unmissable):** Look east after sunset. That brilliant white-gold "star" that doesn't belong—that's Jupiter, magnitude -2.8, brighter than any actual star. It rises around 6 PM local time and dominates the eastern sky all evening. Through binoculars, you'll see four tiny points near it—the Galilean moons. Best viewing: 7-10 PM when Jupiter is well-risen but not overhead yet.

**ORION (your reference constellation):** Look south around 8-9 PM. Three bright stars in a perfect line = Orion's Belt. Once you find the Belt, everything else becomes easy. Red-orange star upper left from Belt = Betelgeuse (dying supergiant). Blue-white star lower right = Rigel. Below Belt, fuzzy patch = Orion Nebula (stellar nursery 1,350 light-years away, visible to naked eye as smudge, spectacular through binoculars).

**SIRIUS (brightest star):** From Orion's Belt, look down and left. Brilliant blue-white star, magnitude -1.46, brightest star in Earth's night sky. Only 8.6 light-years away. Sirius is so bright it twinkles noticeably even on clear nights (atmospheric turbulence bending light). You cannot miss it once you know where to look. Best viewing: 9 PM onward when risen higher in southeast.

**WINTER TRIANGLE (massive asterism):** Connect Sirius (bottom), Betelgeuse (upper left), Procyon (upper right). This triangle spans 30+ degrees of sky—roughly three fist-widths at arm's length. Once identified, it becomes your winter navigation framework. Procyon sits in Canis Minor (Little Dog) constellation, 11.5 light-years distant.

**CAPELLA (overhead around midnight):** Golden-yellow star directly overhead (or nearly so) for Northern Hemisphere observers. Magnitude 0.08, 6th brightest star in night sky. Actually four stars—two binary pairs orbiting each other 43 light-years away. Marks Auriga constellation (the Charioteer). If you're out at midnight and look straight up, there's Capella.

**MOON (waning crescent, minimal):** Moon is at 80% illumination waning gibbous tonight, visible in southern sky after sunset, setting around 3-4 AM. Bright enough to provide light but not washing out stars significantly. Look for crater detail along the terminator line (shadow boundary) with binoculars. By December 21st (solstice), Moon will be down to 60% illumination, even darker for sky viewing.

**PLEIADES (star cluster):** Look high in south around 9 PM, in Ta**us constellation. Fuzzy patch of stars—Seven Sisters cluster, 445 light-years away. Naked eye sees 6-9 stars in tight group (people with excellent vision see more). Through binoculars: dozens of stars revealed, beautiful jewel box. One of nearest star clusters to Earth, young stars only 100 million years old.

**How to observe—practical tips:**

**Timing:** Start around 7-8 PM after full darkness (sunset ~4:30-5:00 PM depending on location). Peak viewing 9-11 PM when most objects well-risen. Hardcore observers stay past midnight for Capella at zenith.

**Location:** Even suburban locations work tonight—Moon not too bright, planets and bright stars visible through moderate light pollution. If you can drive 15 minutes to darker area, do it—Milky Way becomes visible, Pleiades shows more stars, Orion Nebula appears clearer.

**Dark adaptation:** Give eyes 20-30 minutes to adapt fully. Avoid phone screens (red light mode helps if you need to check time/weather). Your pupils dilate from 2mm to 7mm in darkness, rod cells activate, faint stars suddenly appear. Patience rewards you.

**Dress code:** December nights are colder than you think when standing still. Layer up—base layer, fleece, winter coat. Hat (you lose heat through head), gloves, warm socks. If observing for an hour, bring blanket or sit in camping chair. Hypothermia sneaks up on motionless observers.

**What you don't need:** Telescope (limits field of view for wide sky touring). Star apps (nice but not necessary—follow this guide). Special equipment. Astronomy experience. Permission. Just go outside.

**Observation sequence suggestion:**

1. Start with Jupiter (east, unmissable)—watch 5 minutes, see if you can spot moons with binoculars
2. Find Orion's Belt (south)—easiest pattern, anchor for everything else
3. Trace to Betelgeuse (red), then Rigel (blue)—color contrast obvious
4. Find Sirius (down-left from Belt)—brightest star, confirm you're seeing correct object
5. Complete Winter Triangle (Sirius-Betelgeuse-Procyon)—major accomplishment
6. Look for Pleiades (high south in Ta**us)—test your vision
7. Scan Milky Way if dark enough (arches overhead southwest to northeast)
8. Return to Jupiter before ending—check if moon positions changed over hour

**Why tonight specifically matters:** We're 2 days before winter solstice. After December 21st, Jupiter continues dominating evenings but begins setting earlier each night. Winter constellations remain but shift westward. Tonight gives you spectacular winter sky at its December prime—planets, constellations, dark conditions aligning. By late January, Jupiter sets by midnight. By March, winter constellations retreat. This is peak winter sky season.

December 19th. Clear skies forecast for much of the US tonight. Everything visible. Everything accessible. This is your night.
