They know who you are, even when you don’t. Perhaps this is one of the reasons we feel so drawn to horses. With them we can find solace in knowing that they don’t need us to be anything but ourselves. Because they already know us. They will immediately sense our spirit and our intentions. There’s no faking it with these animals. This morning spent with the Alter Real mares in Portugal only convinced me further of this. Our contact who worked at the stud were quite surprised that the mares didn’t run away, when we approached them at 6 am in the dark. She for sure thought they would’ve ran for the hills. Instead they all watched us with sleepy eyes, some slowly waking up and stretching their bodies, and one by one they came over to say good morning.
