Meet the Instructor: Dr. San Fung-German
Dr. San Fung-German has been studying Chito Ryu Karate for more than 25 years and has been an instructor at Halifax Ryuseikan since 2011. She holds the rank of 3rd Degree Black Belt.
A former WKF Canadian Kumite Champion (-53kg), San represented Canada from 1994–2004 and earned multiple national medals, including a WKF Kata bronze medal in 2001.
Internationally, she is a 6-time Chito Ryu Soke Cup World Champion:
• 3x Kumite Champion (1998, 2004, 2013)
• 2x Kata Champion (1998, 2013)
• 1x Team Kumite Champion (2004)
She was also the 1998 Kumite Grand Champion, winning the featured heavyweight vs lightweight match, and earned overall Soke Cup Grand Champion honours in both 2008 and 2013.
In 1999, she was recognized with the Nova Scotia IKON Award as Female Athlete of the Year.
Beyond competition, San has helped develop athletes across the province as a Nova Scotia WKF Team Coach since 2005 (with a brief 5-year hiatus).
Her experience, leadership, and dedication to the art continue to make a lasting impact on students at Halifax Ryuseikan Karate.

Meet the Instructor – Steve Gionet
With over four decades of dedication to Chito Ryu Karate, Sensei Gionet brings experience, discipline, and deep-rooted tradition to every class.
Training since 1981 and teaching for close to 40 years, Sensei Gionet holds the rank of 3rd Degree Black Belt.
He began his training under Sensei Delaney at the Atlantic Karate Club, continuing until his passing, and has trained under Sensei German since 2005.
In 1982, Sensei Gionet performed a demonstration for O’Sensei, reflecting an early and lasting commitment to the art.
He competed in local tournaments throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, consistently ranking in the top three.
Sensei Gionet has also completed NCCP Level 1 Coaching Certification and Level 2 Theory, combining technical expertise with a strong coaching foundation.
He is committed to helping students grow with discipline, respect, and confidence both on and off the dojo floor.
