Professional Development Day Recap
Today, our educators participated in three professional development sessions focused on intentional teaching, professionalism, and the importance of process-based learning.
1. Intentional Play – ARCQE
Our first session focused on intentional play and the importance of being purposeful in our classroom planning. Educators explored the why behind the activities and experiences we provide, emphasizing the importance of moving beyond simply planning activities to creating meaningful learning opportunities. We also discussed the importance of documenting children's interests and using these observations to guide planning, ensuring our programming reflects the children's individual needs, interests, and development.
2. Professionalism: More Than a Job
Our second session focused on what it means to be a professional in early childhood education. We discussed the importance of maintaining professionalism in our daily practice and explored practical ways to demonstrate it when interacting with families and fellow educators. The conversation emphasized that professionalism extends beyond our responsibilities and tasks; it is reflected in our communication, attitudes, teamwork, and the example we set each day.
3. Process vs. Product Art Workshop & Open-Ended Play Invitations
We concluded the day with a hands-on workshop exploring the difference between product-focused art and process-based art. Educators participated in an activity designed to simulate the experience children may have when given limited time, strict instructions, and expectations to produce identical results. Under the direction of our assistant director, educators were given a limited amount of time to complete the activity, with our director providing corrections and emphasizing consistency in the finished products.
Following the activity, we reflected on how the experience made us feel and connected those feelings to the experiences children may have when they are not given the time, freedom, or materials to explore their own ideas. This provided an opportunity to reflect on the importance of process art, where the focus is on exploration, creativity, problem-solving, and the learning that takes place throughout the experience rather than the final product.
We also explored open-ended play invitations and how providing children with accessible materials and opportunities for exploration supports their independence, creativity, and individual interests.
Overall Takeaway
Today's PD day encouraged educators to reflect on their practice, strengthen their professionalism, and be more intentional in the experiences they provide. A common theme throughout all three sessions was the importance of understanding the why behind our decisions and ensuring our practices are meaningful, respectful, and responsive to the children in our care.
