Summer is winding down and it’s time to get back to working hard, sharpening our skills, and building momentum heading into the fall.

Join us for our monthly Marathon Rolling — two hours of back-to-back 10-minute rounds. A great opportunity to challenge yourself, work through tough positions, improve your conditioning, and simply get better.

YOUTH GRADING | AGES 9–13 🥋 The afternoon of Saturday, August 15th brought our second group of youth students onto the mats for grading! After our younger group completed their grading in the morning, it was time for 12 of our 9–13-year-old students to step up and put their hard work to the test. Each student first had to successfully pass their curriculum test before earning the opportunity to move on to the Shark Tank — approximately 40 minutes of back-to-back grappling matches with very little rest in between. This grading is about so much more than earning a new belt. It tests their technique, conditioning, determination, composure and ability to keep going when they’re tired. All 12 students worked hard and pushed through the challenges put in front of them. There are always areas to improve, and that is all part of the journey. It is amazing to watch these young athletes learn that nothing is simply given — it is earned through hard work, discipline and perseverance. We are incredibly proud of all 12 students who stepped onto the mats that afternoon, completed their grading and earned their new belts. Congratulations! 👏🥋 Hard work pays off. Keep showing up. 🥋 YOUTH GRADING • AUGUST 15, 2026 🥋 This past Saturday, our 5–8 year old students stepped onto the mats for their grading, and we couldn’t be prouder of the hard work they put in! Before earning the opportunity to enter the Shark Tank, each student first had to pass their curriculum test, demonstrating the techniques and skills they’ve been working on in class. Then came the challenge — approximately 40 minutes of back-to-back grappling matches in the Shark Tank! 🦈 These kids were tired. They were challenged. They had moments where things didn’t go their way. But they kept going. By the end of the morning, six students had earned their new belts! 🥋👏 There are always areas to improve — and that’s exactly what training is about. At such a young age, they are already learning something much bigger than Jiu Jitsu: how to work hard, persevere when things get difficult, and understand that accomplishments are earned. A new belt isn’t simply given because time has passed. It represents the work, effort, growth and determination that came before it. Watching these young students develop their confidence, resilience and work ethic is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do. Congratulations to all six of our newly promoted students! Couldn’t be any happier for Annalise Gale, winning her 2nd ADCC Youth World title. It is such a great feeling to see your student, who works so hard, complete their mission and celebrate with a tremendous amount of joy.

After her victory, while making our way out, we would notice Prof. Wes Cooper out of coaching his daughter Chloe in the finals. Over the past 2 years, I’ve been blessed to befriend Wes and his family, so it was only proper to encourage and look on as this amazing athlete, with her family and team behind her, grinded into overtime, locked in a body lock takedown to mount, securing the points with approximately 54 seconds left to become an ADCC Youth World Champion. I won’t lie, it brought tears to my eyes to watch them celebrate in victory.

Before the tournament began, I was confident that both my student Annalise Gale and Chloe Cooper would become 2026 Champions and was adamant that we get a picture of the 2 warriors before and after. Congratulations, Chloe Cooper, Prof. Wes and family. What an accomplishment!

And although I wasn’t able to watch one of my favourite grapplers, Lincoln Cooper , I was pumped to hear that he took home a Bronze medal. Watching his match on FloGrappling afterwards, I was super happy for him and impressed with his victory over a tough opponent, getting the body lock takedown with 43 seconds remaining to earn his spot on the podium. Body lock masters! They say the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Way to go, Coops!! Congratulations!! God’s intervention of connection has definitely brought me closer to this family, and I’m grateful.

Also, looking on, I couldn’t pass up watching my friend and one of Team DOBJJ’s favourite athletes, .torresjj, compete in the finals. What a match! Taking on a super tough opponent, X would escape submission holds, apply some of his own, and with the score being 2-0 for his opponent and seconds left, X would dig deep to earn 3 points and take the title, becoming the 2026 ADCC Youth World Champion. Amazing! Super pumped for him and his team/family . Congratulations!

During this event, there were so many highlights. Watching Prof. Matt Kwan compete at the Austin Open was definitely inspiring and so fun to witness. Winning his first 2 matches to face one of the world’s best in Dorian Olivarez was astonishing. Then, to see his performance in the next 2 matches, winning via submission and decision to make the podium and win the Bronze—simply amazing! Congratulations, Prof. Matt Kwan!

On another note, besides my Canadian athlete, Prof. Kwan had 5 athletes representing Canada and his school out of Vancouver, BC. Congratulations to Nicole , Saverio , Lincoln , Samwise and Jonas……. It was fun to watch and cheer you all on.

Also, it was great to watch Coach Corey with his athletes, Nico, competing in the Austin Open, and Marley making it to the finals and taking home a Silver Medal for the 2nd time. Congratulations!

Entering the Absolute division, Anna “Pena” would look to win a second title and $1,000 USD. In her first match, she would take on Morales, whom she defeated in the finals of her bracket. At approximately 1 minute and 20 seconds in, Anna would find the spiderweb position, attacking the arm and applying a stellar X break to secure the submission and win her first Absolute match.

Moving on to the finals, Annalise would face the 54 kg 2026 Youth World Champion Alana Garcia . Wow! This match was so close. Could have gone either way. Battling back and forth between Garcia’s passing and Annalise’s half guard, the match would go to a ref’s decision, with the judges rendering Garcia the victor. Congratulations to her and her team , and congratulations to Anna “Pena” on a well-deserved podium finish in the Absolutes.

If you’re going to lose a match, this is the way to do it. Definitely had some great moments and opportunities to win the match. God knows what you need, and this will only make a driven athlete like .pena.dobjj hungry to improve and win Absolutes on another occasion.

Our youth program, where Annalise is often an instructor, was super excited to welcome her home, so in true Champion form, she brought in her belt and medal to take a picture with them and celebrate. It was so nice to see.

This year’s 2026 ADCC Youth World Championship event was pretty cool, to say the least. I felt the Spirit of God working through me quite often, which I’m grateful for. I had the opportunity to spread the love of Jesus to some prominent figures in our sport and make some awesome connections. I thank God for this opportunity as a child of the one true King and as a Professor and Coach.

Huge shout-out to everyone who helped make this happen: the Gale family, and my entire .ca community. Last but not least, my super supportive wife and kids. Love you to the moon and back!

2026 ADCC Youth World Championship — Austin, TX

It’s been 2 years since my student and protégé made Canadian history by becoming the first ADCC Youth World Champion at the T-Mobile Centre in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In order to return to the world stage and compete for a 2nd title, Annalise Gale, better known as .pena.dobjj, Anna “Pena,” would have to compete in many ADCC Opens and Trials in order to earn her spot at this year’s ADCC Youth World Championship in Austin, Texas.

She did so by competing in January 2024 in Long Beach, March 2024 in Vegas, October 2024 in Vancouver, January 2025 in SD, February 2025 in Portland, March 2025 in SJ, Aug. ’25 in Vegas, Oct. ’25 in Van., Nov. ’25 in Orlando, Jan. ’26 in SD, Mar. ’26 in Phoenix, Apr. ’26 in Calgary, and June ’26 in Dallas.

Over that span of time, she was able to take home 17 Gold Medals and a numerous amount of points. Nobody works harder than Anna “Pena,” and getting the invite to compete this year was definitely earned.

As a coach and Professor, I feel blessed to have Anna as one of my dedicated, disciplined, loyal, high-level, and super competitive youth athletes. Her parents/family, in particular her Jiu Jitsu fan and super mom, have been very supportive in helping her attend and compete in many tournaments abroad and get in as much training as possible.

From her extensive classes at her home school, .ca, to the many cross-training sessions at , , , and , to name a few, her dedication and mat time speak for themselves.

In preparation for this year’s event, she has been laser-focused on becoming the ADCC Youth World Champion once again.

Travelling to Houston from Calgary via airplane and from Houston across the flatlands of Texas to Austin via SUV, the returning Champ, her family, and I were excited to reach the venue and get the festivities started.

On Friday, August 7th, 2026, ADCC hosted the Austin Open and the ADCC Youth World Championship weigh-ins and bracket reveal/face-offs. There were many highlights of the day, from brushing shoulders with many famous athletes and practitioners, to cheering on some of our fellow Canadian athletes competing in the Open, and, of course, the 2026 ADCC Youth World Championship face-offs.

Saturday, August 8th, 2026, would be an incredible day to remember. With 303 fighters, 110 Academies, and 69 Divisions, the road to the ADCC Youth World Championship would not be an easy one.

Warming up extensively and staying calm before the storm, Annalise “Pena” Gale would find herself stepping onto Mat #4 for the semi-finals, competing against Mila Noda, a former opponent having that same dream: to reach the finals for a chance to walk down the runway and bring home that coveted Belt and title of ADCC Youth World Champion 2026.

Being in her corner, accompanied by Annalise’s sister, Mikayla, for some top-level moral support, we would look on as the match started quickly.

Her opponent managed to pull guard, with Anna looking to immediately pass. Her opponent managed to get back to her feet, where a quick stand-up exchange would find Anna pulling her adversary into a full closed guard to overhead sweep using her opponent’s momentum, coming on top into full mount.

With tight mount control and working underhooks, I recall yelling for an S-mount control. Our DOBJJ athlete quickly acquired the S-mount and worked to finish the match 3 minutes and 22 seconds in via armlock submission.

Onto the finals!!

To say I was pumped is an understatement, and of course, the mindset now shifted to whom she would be facing for the Championship.

On the other side of the bracket, 2 very tough competitors would go to war, not without some controversy, with the match being stopped and restarted due to some illegal tactics. Nonetheless, the victor, Juliet Morales (5 x Pan Kids Champion), would move on to the finals to face our returning Champion.

After a long delay waiting for the remaining brackets to finish up with their semi-final matches, then sitting through all of the bronze medal matches, hours later, Anna “Pena” would make the walk down the runway to compete under the lights in the final match to decide who would be this year’s Champion.

The match would start out with both fighters looking to attain a takedown or back take. Anna’s opponent would secure a strong overhook and apply a quick uchi mata throw to acquire the first takedown of the match.

With no points awarded, being in the first half of a six-minute match, Annalise would calmly compose her lethal closed guard and start to climb high as a patented technique applied surely by instant reaction.

Once high with her guard and controlling the arm, DOBJJ’s elite athlete would secure a tight armlock submission attempt. Her opponent would look to defend, which is when Anna counterattacked, rolling her head under to finish with the Choi-style straight armlock at 5 minutes and 2 seconds in to become the 2-time ADCC Youth World Champion, a feat only 10 athletes were able to attain at this event.

Amazing accomplishment by a focused, determined, and class-act Champion.

Congratulations to our 2026 ADCC Youth World Champion. Making history in Canada once again and being the only Canadian to secure this title is absolutely phenomenal!

As a Professor/Coach, I am blessed beyond belief, and between Anna “Pena” and I, we are very proud to give all glory to God and have no fear in shouting out:

We are incredibly proud of Annalise Gale, Nash Cook and Cecilia O’Regan for representing Dallas O’Regan Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at the 2026 IBJJF Pan Kids Championship in Florida — competing against some of the best young athletes in the world.

🥇 Annalise — Gold, becoming a two-time Pan Kids Champion
🥉 Nash — Bronze in his Pan Kids debut
💪 Cecilia — stepped up two weight classes and battled through an incredibly tough division

Of course, medals are something to celebrate, but what makes us most proud is how these kids represented our team — with courage, humility, resilience and respect.

We started our academy right here in Cochrane in 2019, and seeing our athletes representing our little town on the world stage is something we will never take for granted.

Thank you to the Cochrane Eagle and Izaiah Louis Reyes for sharing their story and highlighting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in our community.

And thank you to our entire DO BJJ family. The support these kids show one another — in victory and in defeat — is what makes this team so special.

From private lessons, to our packed kids classes, an amazing Women’s Class with a new friend Paulo visiting all the way from Ottawa, and strong adult classes every evening—it has been a week full of learning, growth, laughter, and hard work.

Seeing our students encourage one another, friendships continue to grow, families training together, and everyone pushing to become a little better each day is what it’s all about. Whether you’re just starting your journey or have been training for years, every class is another opportunity to improve.

We truly have an incredible community, and we never take it for granted. Thank you to everyone who walks through our doors, trusts us with your journey, and helps make this academy such a special place.

There is so much to be grateful for, and we feel truly blessed.

🇨🇦 She’s going back to Worlds! 🌎

We are incredibly proud to announce that Annalise Gale has once again received an invitation to compete at the 2nd ADCC Youth World Championship, taking place this Sunday, August 9th, in Austin, Texas.

In 2024, Anna made history by becoming the first Canadian youth athlete ever to win an ADCC Youth World Championship title. Her hard work, discipline, and determination have earned her another opportunity to compete against the very best young grapplers in the world.

It is an incredible accomplishment to be invited back, and we couldn’t be prouder to see her representing DO BJJ, Alberta, and Canada on the world stage once again.
