This week our grammarian chose the word of the week as : Copacetic.
Meaning: âin excellent order.â
Which is funny⊠because Table Topics is usually the exact opposite of feeling orderly at first.
You get called up unexpectedly. Your brain blanks. Your body panics for half a second.
And then something fascinating happens:
people rise.
Stories appear. Confidence appears. Laughter appears.
And somehow, by the end of the night, it all becomes a little more copacetic.

This is what a winning room actually looks like.
Iâm incredibly proud of our Cochrane Toastmasters group right now.
Out of 8 clubs in the area competition:
đ„ 1st place speech by Edmund Burke â moving on to Divisionals
đ„ 1st place Table Topics by Dani Reaume
đ„ 2nd place Table Topics by Melissa Johannes
But what stood out to me wasnât just the results.
It was the energy in the room.
Our group is warm.
Engaged.
Genuinely supportive.
We listen to each other.
We celebrate each other.
We show up fully when someone is speaking.
And that matters more than people think.
Because confidence isnât built in isolation.
Itâs built in environments where:
â youâre seen
â youâre supported
â and youâre given space to grow without being torn apart
Thatâs what weâve created in Cochrane.
And the results are just a byproduct of that.
If youâve ever thought about joining Toastmasters, donât just look for a clubâ
Find a room that feels like this.

Some people don't stop speaking... they just stop being heard.
There was a moment during the Toastmasters competition this week that stopped me in my tracks.
A woman shared how, as a young girl, she had big dreams⊠but not the space for them to be heard.
Over time, her voice didnât disappear.
It just got quieter.
More internal.
Safer on paper than in the room.
So she wrote.
Her journal became the place where her voice could exist⊠without interruption.
And years laterâafter hearing about Toastmasters for 5 yearsâshe finally walked into a room where she could begin speaking again.
Not perfectly.
Not loudly.
But honestly.
And something about that hit me deeply.
Because I think a lot of us know what it feels like to stop speakingânot because we have nothing to say, but because somewhere along the way, it didnât feel safe to say it.
Reclaiming your voice isnât instant.
Itâs built in rooms that feel safe enough⊠long enough.
Thatâs what Toastmasters has been for me.
A place to practice telling the truthâwithout collapsing, without shrinking, without needing it to land perfectly.
If youâve ever felt your voice get quieter over time⊠youâre not alone.
And itâs not gone.
It just needs a place to come back online.

You know the saying "the silence is deafening"? We relate it to something bad, but it can actually enhance your speaking skills. This video is a great illustration of how important silence, a pause, is.
And note Vinh's comment about those dreaded ums and ahs.
