As Albertans gear up for another round of online learning, I am sending positive vibes to all the parents/guardians/caregivers who are supporting their little learners. This is tough, for everyone; students and teachers alike do not want to be away from their favoured learning environments. As parents/guardians/caregivers approach this unpredictable time, my “advice” as a teacher, is to just do what you can.

Learning does not always have to be “textbook learning”; it can be going for a walk/hike/bike ride and talking about the weather that day, reading a book together and asking questions or predicting what may come next in the story, it’s watching a superhero movie and chatting about superpowers and what superpower you’d most like to have. Every opportunity is a learning experience, so the the learning will happen.

And, if you do feel as though you need any resources over the next couple of weeks, feel free to reach out! There is an abundance of online resources that can support you and your little learners over the next few weeks!

This morning as I reached for my “Pink Shirt Day” shirt and made a mental note to dress both my little ones in pink, I had to stop for a moment and really think about why I was wearing pink today. Why is that we only wear pink today? Is it because I wore an orange shirt on “Orange Shirt Day”? Is it because I posted and used the “Bell Let’s Talk” hashtag on January 28th? Or is it because I have made more of a cognizant effort to focus on Black History for the month of February? Why do we have designated days for things that should be celebrated, remembered, and focused on each and every day?

As both a mother and a teacher, I have to really think about how I use these “days” or “months” as teaching moments in everyday learning. Is it enough to teach my students or my own children about how Indigenous communities were affected by Residential Schools on only ONE day of the entire year?

My husband and I recently watched an interview by Wayne Simmonds where he said that you don’t have to wait until February of every year to celebrate black people’s achievements; there shouldn’t only be one month but it should rather be all-inclusive and celebrated at all times. That spoke volumes to us, and perhaps was the catalyst that sparked my reflection on “Pink Shirt Day”.

And while I will still wear my pink shirt today and explain to my two-and-a-half-year-old as to why we are wearing pink, I have to think beyond today, and be mindful of how to ensure that I am creating a safe anti-bully environment in my classroom and my community, because every single day should be “Pink Shirt Day” (and Orange Shirt Day, Bell Let’s Talk Day, Black History Month, etc.)

I am still learning and find it imperative to my own development to reach out to my community to find the answers that I am missing. My commitment to anti-bullying is to support those in my community (whether it be in the community of Cochrane or via social media), by lifting others, and truly supporting them. How will you ensure that your own anti-bullying commitment reaches beyond February 24th?

Day 47 of the Polar Vortex in Calgary ...or at least that’s what it feels like! So, we are pulling out all the stops, working on some sorting (Fruit & Vegetable Velcro Sort, $5) and dreaming of -15 days as opposed to -38 🤦🏻‍♀️.
