Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah
13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his
disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still
others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not
revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell
you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates
of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of
heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever
you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” 20 Then he ordered his
disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

The Faith of a Canaanite Woman
21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 A
Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of
David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering
terribly.”
23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged
him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.”
24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”
25 The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said.
26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the
dogs.”
27 “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from
their master’s table.”
28 Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is
granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.

Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost

Jesus Walks on the Water
22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.
26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.
27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be
afraid.”
28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
29 “Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward
Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink,
cried out, “Lord, save me!”
31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little
faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those
who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God."

Tenth Sunday after Pentecost

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand
13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to
a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the
towns. 14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion
on them and healed their sick.
15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a
remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they
can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”
16 Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something
to eat.”
17 “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.
18 “Bring them here to me,” he said. 19 And he directed the people to sit
down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to
heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the
disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20 They all ate and
were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken
pieces that were left over. 21 The number of those who ate was about five
thousand men, besides women and children.

Ninth Sunday after Pentecost

The Parables of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl
44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man
found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and
bought that field.
45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls.
46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he
had and bought it.

The Parable of the Net
47 “Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into
the lake and caught all kinds of fish. 48 When it was full, the fishermen
pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in
baskets, but threw the bad away. 49 This is how it will be at the end of the
age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous
50 and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and
gnashing of teeth.
51 “Have you understood all these things?” Jesus asked.
“Yes,” they replied.
52 He said to them, “Therefore every teacher of the law who has become a
disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings
out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.

The Parable of the Sower
13 That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. 2 Such
large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while
all the people stood on the shore. 3 Then he told them many things in
parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was
scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it
up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang
up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the
plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other
seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. 8 Still other
seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty
times what was sown. 9 Whoever has ears, let them hear.”
18 “Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 When anyone
hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil
one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the
seed sown along the path. 20 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to
someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since
they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution
comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 22 The seed falling
among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of
this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful."
23 But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word
and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a
hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.

Fifth Sunday after Pentecost

34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law— 36 a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.
37 Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.
40 Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward.
42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because they are my disciples, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward."

Fourth Sunday after Pentecost
21 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. 22 You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. 23 When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. Truly I tell you, you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
24 The student is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25 It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul, how much more the members of his household! 26 So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. 27 What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. 28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
32 Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. 33 But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven."
