Here you go...the last rendition of the Viking logo beside the concept art for the new Valkyrie mascot of William Academy. Below are the talking points given to Mayor John Henderson as he introduced the logo to frame the school's choice:

Our new mascot is dedicated to the students that came before, and the students yet to come.

The design of the mascot was inspired by the Vikings mascot of CDCI West.

Valkyries, in the mythology of the Vikings, were like angels, who would raise fallen warriors from the field of battle to fight again.

Valkyries are traditionally female. Needing a new mascot, William Academy has been given the chance to offer some diversity and show women as symbols of strength and spirit (instead of the traditionally male “warriors” or “the Spartans”)

The current iteration is just one of many possibilities, as students will be helping choose the final design later this year.

Hello West friends!

As you may know, the West building is alive again and operating as a private school, William Academy. They had an open house today and I went over to check it out.
Starting with 25 students last September from four countries (Vietnam, China, Mexico, and Brazil), they have grown to almost 50 students. The third floor is now a dorm to house the students. By next fall, they expect to start with 75 students or more, with the intent of growing the population past 200 in the coming years.

Next year, the school will be open to local student to attend, and they are offering 10 full scholarships for local students to help get local recruitment going.

But I think the most wonderful thing is that they do not want to forget the history that has been present in that building. The second floor hall outside the gym is decorated with large wall hangings depicting the history of the West through the decades. The gym still bears the "Go West Go" sign at the back of the gym and they plan to keep it there.

But perhaps the nicest gesture to the past is that they unveiled their school mascot today that they will use. The students, in keeping with West history but wanting to make a statement for their future, have selected the Norse character of the Valkyrie as their logo. The Valkyries are the female warriors that descend from Asgard to assist the Viking warriors on the battlefield. I had to admit that I was quite moved by the thoughtfulness of the first student body to make such a lovely tie between past, present, and future. I've asked to have the image sent to me and I'll post it here when I receive it.
