Good work, Stefan! And thank you Emily Armour for the opportunity to participate in the Music for Veterans Project.

We are excited to share that Stefan will be premiering a piece composed to celebrate the service of Major (Ret'd) David Valentine later this Spring. David's lengthy and varied lifetime of service deeply informed Stefan's compositional process. As a Music for Veterans Project participant for only 1 year, it is incredible that Stefan has already composed 3 original works with the help of his amazing instructor Catharina De Beer! Way to go Stefan!

"The lasting impression they make is of deeply integrated performances that flow naturally as if the music were being created on the spot. " - Gramophone

"One doesn’t listen to a program of violin music here, but to real chamber music, as it should be… Suspended between poetry and romance, the fluidity of the piano intertwines intimately with the poignancy of the violin." - La scena musicale

Don't miss this opportunity to see a world-class pianist!

"Last weekend, a small audience at St. Peter’s Church had the privilege of listening to a piano recital the likes of which is rarely heard outside of Carnegie Hall or the top concert halls of Europe. They sat in stunned disbelief as the pianist delivered immensely difficult, profound music of Beethoven, Chopin and Schumann with flawless expertise and maturity far beyond his years.
All of this masterful technique, depth of emotion, power, and sensitivity came out of the mind, heart and hands of an 18-year-old, Sasha Luchkov." ~ Ann Mendenhall

Next Sunday, June 18th (Father’s Day) at 7pm, you can hear Sasha perform at St. Michael’s Church in Chemainus.
Entry is by donation, and we know those who come will be generous, as the donations will support Ukrainian refugees as well as Sasha’s further education.

This is how Sasha introduces himself:

"I'm Sasha Luchkov, 18 years old pianist from Ukraine, currently studying at Shawnigan Lake School on Vancouver Island. After the war in Ukraine started in 2022, the question of my future came up immediately. Fortunately, I was granted a scholarship to participate in Music festival in Perugia, Italy a month after winning the 2nd prize at the International piano competition in Tel-Aviv, Israel. In Italy I met a wonderful professor, Ilana Vered, who noticed my passion for music and offered to become her student. It was truly what is called "at the behest of fate". Prof. Vered and Thrive Refuge team found the way (for me) to leave Ukraine before turning 18 and provided me with a charming place to study abroad. After spending a few months in Italy and preparing for a trip to Canada, I came here and joined Shawnigan Lake School community in January 2023. "
