With something as solemn and serious as Orange Shirt Day, it can sometimes feel hard to know where to start to explain to children— especially very young children— but it also is something that needs to be acknowledged in a meaningful way.
We started gently by wearing our orange shirts together, and we also created our own versions at our craft table.
Using words that were easy for them to understand, we talked about how not so long ago, some grown-ups made some very unkind choices for children and families simply because they were different. We also talked about how important it is to be kind and respectful to everyone we meet, because our diversity is what makes us strong and unique.
Finally, we wrapped up with discussions around why we matter, and why every child deserves kindness, respect, to be loved, and to feel safe.
