Edmonton Soaring Club

Edmonton Soaring Club Edmonton's glider flying club We are people who share a passion for the sport of soaring. Most importantly, we are all volunteers.

Our club can teach you how to fly as well as rent gliders to you when you are licensed for your ongoing enjoyment. Some members purchase a share in a sailplane to increase their enjoyment. Our instructors, our tow pilots, our club executives, and the people who work on the flight line getting gliders ready to fly are all volunteers. This helps to keep costs down - you do not pay for instruction. Membership fees are used to maintain our facilities.

A break in the storms led to a great weekend out at the field. 36 flights, 22 of them instructional with right hand circuits, downwind landings, and a simulated rope break. We also got some of the soaring that has been missing this summer. Check out this brief clip of BVO thermaling under PKZ over some very green Albertan fields.

So what is "wave" soaring? It's incredible.

A standing wave of rising/falling air appears near mountains, and a skilled glider pilot can ride it to enormous heights. Watch this replay of Ray's flight on Sunday showing both "thermal" and then "wave" soaring. Launched from Cowley, he took one of our club gliders to over 20,000ft! 🌄🍁
