I’m giving my arranging and music theory skills a workout this week as I finish up recording accompaniment tracks for our upcoming K-3 musical “The Music Machine”. The learning curve is huge but I’m inspired by the possibilities for myself and my students.

Proud mom sent a shot of my piano student entertaining the customers at the ice cream store on the spur of the moment. “Make the music you love, love the music you make” in action! So sweet.

Had such a great time with my piano students at the Chilliwack Lions Music Festival last weekend. It takes an army of volunteers to provide this unique event for budding musicians. My students played very well. They were terrified to be adjudicated, but all survived to play another day. It was great professional development for me to attend several classes over 3 days observing student performances and listening to the comments of these veteran judges. Can’t wait to up our game next year!

As i was playing the piano this Sunday, I was so grateful for all the skills i learned in my youth. Even in a simple church service I played piano and sang harmony simultaneously, I read notes and chord symbols, I chose the keys based on my knowledge of the singing range of the congregation, I improvised an accompaniment and I transposed to different a different key without music. Imagine learning skills in piano lessons that you can use for decades of your life. It thrills me when my students learn these skills and make them their own.

Time for another Piano Gathering on Wednesday February 14 3:30-4:20. This time we’ll meet at Highroad Academy’s music classroom where several keyboards will be set up so we can all play together. We will listen to each other play, learn some new skills together and other one-of-a-kind activities. All this plus snacks!

I’m experimenting with a setup for my students for Piano Gathering today, when 6 of my students gather for a group lesson once every term. Each student has prepared a song to play for their colleagues. I’m going to video just their hands as they play. Then I’ll airdrop the files to my laptop so we can all see just each other’s hands. These disembodied hands show us details we don’t usually notice but also it’s super to create this videos. Kids who are camera shy really love it. Here’s an example.
