"What I think is overlooked in this is the way these transfers fit into Premier Eby’s larger authoritarian project. This is, after all, a man who attempted to pass an enabling act permitting him to rule by decree for two years, legislation that narrowly failed just a year and a half ago. And this is a government demanding the federal government move quickly to pass NDP MP Leah Gazan’s bill to incarcerate any person who questions historical claims the government makes about indigenous history for up to two years.

It is in this context that we must realize that when Eby transfers political control of larger and larger swaths of the province to hereditary chiefs and band council governments, he is effectively creating a system of Bantustans, places with less political accountability, fewer checks and balances, more corruption and self-dealing, where the rule of law gives way, with some frequency, to personal or family rule. And where his friends and allies can more easily run roughshod not just over property rights but our basic freedoms and democratic rights."

I don't know why anyone would want to re-create the South African Bantustans but David Eby seems to be up for it. Creating a bunch of statelets governing rightless subjects, run by local strongmen and pre-colonial aristocrats is not the beginning of emancipation; it is the ultimate elaboration of Apartheid, achieved by PW Botha in 1985.

The Eby government is not emanicipating indigenous people or giving ordinary, working indigenous folks access to the land base. He is creating BC-style townships and Bantustans, Sowetos and Kwazulus, run by the Mangosuthu Buthelezis and Winnie Mandelas of our place and time.

I have been working on this essay for six months. This is my fifth from-scratch draft. My argument is this: we live in an Age of Heroes because the prevalence of heroes is a sign of massive catastrophic systems failure.
