Good evening, Division 4 Families! I hope you all enjoyed your weekend. Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃

ELA ✏️ - We will begin our first Reader’s Theatre assignment of the year.

Math 📏 - We will be doing Order of Operations with addition/subtraction.

Science 🧪 - Grade 6’s from both of our classes will be doing science with Ms. Hunter while the Grade 7’s work through their FSA’s.

French 🇫🇷 - Once the literacy portion of the Grade 7 FSA’s are complete, Grade 6’s will begin French with me while Ms. Hunter completes the numeracy portion of the FSA’s with the Grade 7’s.

Social Studies 🌎 - Students will take part in a student-vote this week while beginning to learn about world & Canadian geography.

PE 💪 - We will be practicing our dribbling & passing in soccer.

Art 🎨 - Some students need to complete their collages this week, and we will all complete a fall-themed project that will be on display in our neighbourhood centre.

A new routine in our class this year is spending time on Fridays practicing our computational fluency across different operations, followed by some fun with card games! Students begin with addition and can level up throughout the year as they demonstrate mastery of each skill. Many students are already showing great progress and will be moving on to subtraction next week! ➕➖✖️➗

After all that hard work, there’s no better way to wind down than learning and playing card games together. This week, we learned how to play 31 — and it’s safe to say we have some pretty competitive kiddos in this group! ♠️♥️♣️♦️

Today, our intermediate students had the opportunity to participate in a Q&A with Chris Wilkinson, learning more about municipal government, the responsibility we hold as (future) voting members of the community, and his vision for the future of North Cowichan. 🗳️

Students asked thoughtful questions and gained valuable insight into the ideas, priorities, and decisions that shape our local community. With our student vote coming up next week, this was a meaningful opportunity to connect our classroom learning to real-world civic engagement while better understanding the role local leadership plays in our everyday lives. 💡

A big thank you to Mr. Wilkinson for taking the time to come speak with our students, answer their thoughtful questions, and help bring this learning to life! 👏

We got onto Duolingo today! We’ll be using this program throughout the year to assist & enhance our French learning. 🤟📈

Our class really enjoyed getting started today, and they can access their Duolingo accounts from home using their SD79 email and password they set up, giving them an opportunity to continue practicing their French outside of school. If they need any help with this, please just contact me or have them write their email/password down to bring home. Happy (French) learning! 🇫🇷

ELA ✏️ - Some students will need to complete their literacy assessments this week before we begin a Halloween-themed Reader’s Theatre group project.

Math 📏 - We will begin algebra with addition & subtraction.

Science 🧪 - Grade 6’s from both of our classes will be doing science with Ms. Hunter while the Grade 7’s begin the literacy portions of their FSA’s during that time with me.

Today, Rob Douglas (and his adorable pup 🐶), joined our intermediate students for a Q&A to help us learn more about municipal government and the upcoming local election. 🗳️

Students had the opportunity to ask questions, learn about how municipal government works, and gain a better understanding of how local decisions can impact our schools, families, and communities. 💡

A big thank you to Mr. Douglas for taking the time to come speak with our students, answer their thoughtful questions, and help bring this learning to life! And now they get to look forward to meeting with the other mayor candidate, Chris Wilkinson, on October 9th! 👏

This week, we are focusing on Truth & Reconciliation in Social Studies. Today, we spent the afternoon learning about residential schools — what they were, why they were established, why Indigenous children were sent to them, and why it is so important that we remember and learn from this history. Students worked diligently in their table groups to explore and answer these important questions collaboratively before coming together as a class to unpack each one further. 📝

Some thoughtful and meaningful takeaways came from today’s learning, and I was proud of the care, maturity, and respect students demonstrated throughout our conversations. We’ll continue these important conversations tomorrow as we recognize Orange Shirt Day and reflect on the message that Every Child Matters. 🧡

Good evening, Division 4 Families! I hope you all enjoyed your weekend! I’m looking forward to another great week as we continue settling in as a class and begin some new units and routines. A reminder that there is no school on Wednesday, September 30, as we recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We will be holding a school assembly on Tuesday, and students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt to show their support and help us honour the message that Every Child Matters. 🧡

Math 📏 - We will start the year with addition & subtraction of decimals & integers.

Science 🧪 - Students will have their first science lessons with Ms. Hunter.

Social Studies 🌎 - We will be doing different activities around Truth & Reconciliation this week.

French 🇫🇷 - Our first French unit of the year will be on the alphabet. Returning students will begin using Duolingo.

PE 💪 - We’re starting the year with soccer.

Art 🎨 - We will begin our first project of the year - “Identity” collages using Canva!

Thank you all for the laughs & wonderful memories. It was a truly memorable year with this great group of kids. And for the first time in a long time, I’ll get to see this whole group back at our school in the fall! That feels really special. Happy summer, everyone! ☀️🤘
