Did you know that American kestrels have eye spots on the back of their head? These dark spots are called ocelli and can help to keep a kestrel safe.

Theories suggest that these eye spots may not only help deter predators but that it may also help to avoid these small raptors from being mobbed by songbirds. Those black eye spots on the back of their head often dissuade attacks from behind, as it is hard for the other species to tell if they are attacking from the front or behind, which can be a life saving situation for the kestrel!

This photo of Gizmo from behind is a perfect example of those dark eye marks!

A small throwback Thursday post of our most adorable Riki. His magnificent plumicorns were just small tufts back then!

Plumacorns (latin for feather-horned) are the feathered tufts on the great horned owl's head. They are primarily used for communication and camouflage!

Gizmo's first program!

This little guy has been progressing so well and is such a brave and curious bird. He joined us for our One Hour Falconry experience this morning and watched the other birds and saw new people and things. It was a little scary for him, but he settled well and was very brave. We're incredibly proud of him!

Plus, a bonus Komori photo as he was feeling left out of the attention Gizmo was getting đŸ˜„

One of our guests in a recent falconry experience commented about something metal being inside the finger of her glove, and we found this lost peacock ring inside. We've tried reaching out to a couple of the recent groups, but no luck so far finding the owner!

If you came to a falconry experience with us in the last week or so and this is your ring, please reach out to us so we can get it back to you!

We want to give everyone a heads up to a change in our location at Capreol Days tomorrow from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm! With the very high chance of rain and thunderstorms in the forecast, we are being moved to set up in the upper hall of the Capreol Arena!

We hope to still be able to run our educational demo inside the hall, but even if the space does not allow it, we will have our wonderful wildlife ambassadors there to meet everyone! If you are coming to Capreol Days, come and say hello!
