Pink Shirt day celebrated on Febuary 26th, raises awarness about bullying. The mission is to create a kind, inclusive world by raising awareness and funds for anti-bullying initiatives.


Fun Facts

- This day was insipired in a small-town in Nova Socitia Canada
- Two 17 year old boys started and organized a protest at their local high school to wear pink in sympathy for another who was being bulied
- Since 2008, net proceeds of over $2.55 million have been distributed to support youth anti-bullying programs in British Columbia and throughout Western Canada

February is Black History Month. The theme for Canada this year is Black Legacy and Leadership: Celebrating Canadian History and Uplifting Future Generations. Canadians will take this month to acknowledge the diversity of Black Canadians and the importance of Black leadership and the legacy being built for future generations (Canada.ca, 2025)

The CKNS would like to place the spotlight on a couple of Black Canadians who have helped shape our heritage and identity as Canadians within the medical community 🇨🇦

Dr. George Phillis (-2001) was a psychologist who lived and worked in Ontario. He supported and impacted numerous students' lives and had a role in establishing the Ontario College of Pyschology. He was awarded the Bea Wicket Award in 1990 for his contributions to education and mental health. He was also awarded the Frank Brennan Award in 1995 for contributions to London children and families in crisis and the Distinctive Service Award in 1996 from the London and Region Psychological Association.

Dr. Dominique Gaspard (1884-1938) suspended his studies as a medical student to enlist in WW1 with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He served with No. 4 Stationary Hospital (later No. 8 General Hospital). He later served overseas before returning home to resume his studies. He was a trailblazer in Montréal for the first generation of Dr.'s of African descent.

Meet The Team: Vanessa Baker

Hello everyone! My name is Vanessa, and I am a 2nd year BScN student and BScN peer tutor with St. Clair College Chatham campus. In 2016 I graduated with a diploma in Veterinary Technology. I worked as a Registered Veterinary Technician for 6 years in small and mixed animal practices in both Saskatchewan and Ontario. I love learning and self-growth, so in 2022 I decided to go back to school for nursing where the learning and career opportunities are endless. I took a 1-year certificate course in Pre-Health Sciences to gain confidence and knowledge, and in 2023 I started the BScN program at St. Clair College Chatham campus. I joined Chatham-Kent Nursing Society to get more involved in the community and help support my peers and future nursing students.

Meet The Team: Tiffany Robinson

It is great to meet you! I’m Tiffany Robinson, a 2nd year BScN student. I have always been in awe of the human body and what it does. After working as a PSW for 15 years, I took the dive and went back to school. I was eager to join the nursing society to make a noticeable difference with my classmates’ and our community. I thoroughly enjoy being an oddball, and making people smile (especially if it comes with a laugh!). I am overjoyed to play an active role as Chatham-Kent Nursing Society’s Vice-President, and hope to do the role justice.

Hi everyone!
My name is Navneet Kaur. I am a 2nd year RPN student. I am passionate about Nursing and committed to supporting my fellow students. I am eager to join the Chatham-Kent Nursing Society, as I am an international student, I can understand firsthand the challenges that international students face throughout their education journey. Hopefully, I can provide valuable support and guidance to International students to make their journey smoother and fulfilled.

Clinical sweaters are now available to order!

The Chatham-Kent Nursing Society is pleased to release the official St. Clair College School of Nursing Clinical Sweaters.

These microfleece sweaters can be worn in lab or in the clinical setting. Remember, you should not be wearing a clinical sweater when performing direct patient care.

For $70, students or faculty can purchase a basic black microfleece sweater with a white logo on the left chest. For an additional $10, you can personalize your sweater with your name.

All proceeds will go directly to the Chatham-Kent Nursing Society. CASH ONLY.

CKNS Vice President Tiffany will be available in the library Monday Jan. 27 and Monday Feb. 3 to collect money and order forms. Or reach out to another CKNS member for assistance submitting your form if needed.
