Grapes, raisins, and even currants can be more dangerous to dogs than most pet parents realize. Even only a few grapes have been linked to sudden kidney failure that may not show up for days, and homegrown or organic grapes carry the same risk.

Veterinary medicine hasn't pinpointed why some dogs react and others don't, or confirmed what makes grapes so toxic, which is exactly why any known ingestion is treated as a potential emergency, not just the large ones.

A great walk can end with an unexpected emergency...

Not because of heat or animal attack —but because of a tiny grass seed.

Grass awns (also called foxtails or spear grass) are sharp seeds that can work their way into a dog's body. Once they're in, they don't back out—they keep moving forward, causing pain, infection, and sometimes surgery.

After every hike, trail walk, or romp through tall grass, take just one minute to check your dog.

👀 Look closely at:

🐾 Between the toes and paw pads
🐾 Inside and around the ears
🐾 Around the nose and nostrils
🐾 Around the eyes
🐾 Under the armpits and groin

Also do extra checks in areas with long fur and feathering

If your dog suddenly starts shaking their head, sneezing repeatedly, limping, or obsessively licking one spot after being outdoors, don't assume it's nothing.

Early removal is much easier than treating a grass awn that's migrated deeper into the body.

A quick check after every adventure can save your dog a lot of discomfort—and potentially an expensive emergency trip to the veterinarian.

On days like today, preventing an emergency is far easier than treating one. ❤️🐾

Even this guy decided that after a short time outside, the best place to be was stretched out in front of the fan!

With the extreme heat and poor air quality affecting much of Ontario, our dogs are working much harder than we realize. Thick smoke and high humidity make it difficult for them to cool themselves, even if they don't seem overly active.

⚠️ A few reminders:

🐾 Keep outdoor exercise short, especially during the hottest part of the day. That shiny coat makes Icon a solar panel in this heat and we are lucky to get 15 minutes play time in the sun.

🐾 Watch for excessive panting, slowing down, drooling, weakness, vomiting, or bright red gums. These can be early signs of heat stress.

🐾 Offer plenty of cool, fresh water and allow frequent rest breaks but do not allow your dog to drink large amounts.

🐾 Use air conditioning or fans to help keep them comfortable indoors. Icon has been trained to sit right in front of a fan during cool down targeting his tongue 👅.

🐾 Avoid strenuous activity immediately before or after large meals. Heat, vigorous exercise, and deep-chested breeds can all contribute to an increased risk of bloat. I never feed my dog until his mouth is closed and he is back to breathing normal. Your dog won't starve if their meal is late. It isn't worth the risk.

Remember, our dogs don't always know when to stop. They'll chase one more ball, take one more lap around the yard, or keep hiking because we're still going. It's up to us to recognize when its time for a break.
