So, hi I’m Meagan, and I’m an engineer 👋🏼

And I LOVE talking about this industry and encouraging the younger generation to pursue this amazing career path.

Since starting my online business Engineering Expectations, I’ve helped thousands of parents and their teens understand if engineering is the right path for them.

I’ve worked at a multi-billion dollar medical device company, running entire teams of engineers, and working with world-renowned doctors and hospitals such as Johns Hopkins.

If you’re a parent who has a high schooler or college student struggling with feeling overwhelmed, you need to hear this.👇🏽

They are NOT ALONE.

They need to stop being so hard on themselves. Everyone, no matter how smart or talented, has struggled.

Of course, they must acknowledge and process these emotions. But, what your teen may not realize is that even the most seasoned engineers have days like these. Take it from me.

In college, I had my fair share of hardship. And doubts crept in, such as…

❌ I was often questioning if I chose the right major.

❌ I did not feel I was smart enough or cut out for this career.

❌ I was worried that engineering would always be this hard.

❌ I thought that it came naturally to everyone else but me.

In those early moments of my schooling, I could have given up, but I was able to take some simple steps and everything turned around. So instead of crawling under a rock, I changed my mindset to…

✅ Focusing on what I could control.

✅ Getting organized and making a plan.

✅ Kept moving forward.

✅ Leveraged my campus resources.

These are small, but very powerful tools, and I’m positive some or all of them will work for your teen.

Who here has a high schooler who is good at math and science, but not sure if engineering is the best choice for college? 🙋‍♀️

Okay- Let me ask this. Who here has a high schooler who can think critically, loves a good challenge, has effective communication, is a team player, and has a solid work ethic? 🙋‍♀️ 🙋‍♀️

Engineering is so much more than being a math and science wiz. It’s just as much, if not MORE, about SOFT SKILLS. These are what separate the good engineers from the great ones.

I’m not going to sugarcoat it. Schooling for engineering is hard, and that’s when being good at math and science is going to be most helpful. But once your high schooler reaches the real world, who they are as a person is going to be what makes them a successful engineer.

I figured this out in a short period of time after getting my first job and becoming the youngest female Technical Lead, managing a team of mostly senior engineers much older than me for a multi-billion dollar medical device company. It wasn’t my Fluid Dynamics or Differential Equations formulas that got me there. It was my abilities that I learned growing up, and these skills that I honed as I worked in industry.

So if your high schooler is on the fence or doubting their abilities, just reassure them that who they are at this very moment is what matters most in Engineering.

One of the main misconceptions about engineers is that they sit on their computers all day and talk to no one.

This could not be further from the truth!

Here are some of the MANY tasks engineers do
👩‍🔬Testing in the lab
⚒Assembling prototypes
📝Attending meetings
🧑‍💼Giving presentations
👥Visiting suppliers
🔍 Investigating failures

Unfortunately, college courses mainly focus on the theoretical side of engineering and not so much on the practical side. By this, I mean engineering courses are extremely rigorous because of all the complex equations you solve.

The good news is, working as an engineer you will use very little of this. College basically teaches you why things work the way they do. It also teaches you to persevere, think through problems, and how to be resourceful.

In the real world, you build tests, run tests, collect data, analyze the data, and use the data to make a decision and to prove the theory. It is much more hands-on!

This is one thing I wished someone would have told me in college as I struggled my way through the coursework. I was so relieved to find out I needed to solve very few equations working as an engineer.

When it comes to choosing an engineering major, it is best to go broad. Stick with the five main branches of engineering (chemical, civil, electrical, industrial, or mechanical).

The more specialized majors all fall under one of the five main branches. For example, aerospace falls under the mechanical engineering branch.

Then, once you start taking college courses and learning what your interests are, you can narrow your focus with a minor or concentration.

Going broad gives you more flexibility when it comes to choosing colleges and opens up more job opportunities when you graduate.
