Inside the Canada Games Centre!

Our second-year Sport and Recreation Management students recently visited the Canada Games Centre in Halifax as part of their Sport Facility Management class.

Students were welcomed by Gary Furlong, General Manager of the Canada Games Centre, who provided an inside look at the management, operations and challenges of running one of the region’s largest multi-purpose recreation facilities.

Gary emphasized the importance of being present, interacting with customers and staff, building relationships and making personal connections. In an industry where facilities, technology and operations continue to evolve, the ability to connect with people remains one of the most important skills a facility manager can have.

Thank you to Gary Furlong and the Canada Games Centre team for welcoming our students and providing such a valuable real-world learning experience! 👏

Behind the Scenes at Scotiabank Centre 🥅 🎸

Our second-year Sport and Recreation Management students recently stepped behind the scenes at Scotiabank Centre as part of their Sport Facility Management class.

A huge thank you to Jenn Cotterill, Director of Facilities and Services at Scotiabank Centre, for providing our students with a comprehensive, behind-the-scenes tour and an inside look at what it takes to operate and modernize a major sport and entertainment facility.

Students explored the facility from top to bottom while learning about:

🔹 Modernizing an aging facility — including accessibility, greening/sustainability and security
🔹 Facility operations and the day-to-day expectations of clients and users
🔹 Food & Beverage operations and serving thousands of guests during events
🔹 Corporate clients, including suites and premium spaces
🔹 The strengths and challenges of the facility’s downtown location
🔹 The important role Scotiabank Centre plays in the community
🔹 The planning, coordination and attention to detail required to successfully operate a major venue

Students truly toured every inch of the building, getting a perspective that simply can't be replicated in a classroom.

And, of course, one of the highlights was getting a look inside the new Halifax Mooseheads dressing room! 🏒

Experiences like this give our students a real-world understanding of the opportunities and challenges involved in sport facility management and the diverse careers available in the sport and recreation industry.

A big thank you to Jenn and the Scotiabank Centre team for welcoming our students and sharing their knowledge and expertise! 👏

SEPTEMBER TO REMEMBER! 🍂

September has been a busy one for our Sport & Recreation Management students!
Our students jumped right into the action, gaining valuable hands-on experience through a number of exciting opportunities:

⛳ Holland College Golf Classic – Students worked alongside the Holland College Foundation and the Holland Hurricanes, helping make this annual event a success.

🧗 Adventure Recreation at Rise & Climb – Students challenged themselves, stepped outside their comfort zones and experienced adventure recreation firsthand as part of their studies.

🏒 The Affleck Cup – Students had a great day competing and socializing with Kinesiology students with a friendly game of soccer baseball and enjoyed some pizza.

From event management and sport tourism to adventure recreation and community engagement, our students are learning by doing—and building the skills and experience they need for careers in the sport and recreation industry.

📸 What a September! And we're just getting started!

🏆Affleck Cup Action!

The annual Affleck Cup is back, a friendly (but competitive!) showdown between the Sport & Recreation Management students and the Kinesiology Diploma students!

This fun tradition, named in honour of former instructor Erroll Affleck, brings the two groups of students together for some spirited games, teamwork, and plenty of laughs.

It was great to see Erroll join us today!

We were also joined by Bert the dog - our unofficial mascot for the day! 🐾

The competition started today with a friendly game of soccer baseball.

Students enjoyed some fun in the sun - and some pizza too!

It’s all about friendly competition, connection, and community spirit, the perfect way to stay active and enjoy campus life!

Adventure Recreation 🌲

Our first-year Sport and Recreation Management students took their learning outside the classroom as part of their Foundations of Sport, Physical Activity and Outdoor Leadership course!

Students spent the morning at Rise and Climb in Cornwall, exploring the ropes course and experiencing firsthand some of the challenges and opportunities that come with adventure recreation.

The experience was a great opportunity for students to challenge themselves, step outside their comfort zones, work together, build confidence and try new recreational opportunities.

For future Sport and Recreation professionals, these hands-on experiences are an important part of understanding what it takes to plan, lead and facilitate meaningful recreational experiences for others.

A great morning of climbing, learning, teamwork and pushing personal limits!

A big thank you to Rise and Climb for providing our students with such a great adventure recreation experience!

🛝 Learning Beyond the Classroom!

The Holland College Sport and Recreation Management Program recently welcomed Ergita Dema, Project Coordinator with Recreation PEI, to speak with our students about playground inspections and the importance of creating and maintaining safe play spaces.

Students had the opportunity to learn more about the role recreation professionals play in identifying potential hazards, conducting inspections, and helping ensure playgrounds are safe, accessible and enjoyable for everyone. 🌳

This visit was especially meaningful as Ergita is a graduate of the Holland College Sport and Recreation Management Program and a former member of the Holland Hurricanes Women’s Basketball Team! 🏀

Presenting a thank-you gift on behalf of the Sport and Recreation Management Program is second year student, Emily Howard!

We’re proud to see our graduates building careers in the recreation field and returning to share their knowledge and experience with the next generation of Sport and Recreation professionals.

Thank you, Ergita, for sharing your expertise with our students!

🏖️ Beaches: Recreation Spaces Right Outside Our Door

On Prince Edward Island, our beaches are more than beautiful places to visit, they are important recreation spaces that contribute to the health, well-being, and quality of life of Islanders and visitors.

From swimming and walking to kayaking, beach volleyball, paddleboarding, running, fishing, and simply enjoying time outdoors, PEI's coastline provides opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to be active and connect with nature. 🌊☀️

For Sport and Recreation Management professionals, understanding the value of these spaces is an important part of planning and delivering recreation opportunities.

Our natural spaces can be some of our greatest recreation facilities, and on PEI, we have an incredible one right along our shores.
