BUOY, OH BOUY!
PEI Mussels are farmed on longlines, with mussel-filled socks suspended in the water.
As the mussels grow and the socks get heavier, farmers add more and more buoys to the lines to keep them suspended in the water and off the bottom.
• This provides better access to food as mussels are filter feeders
• Results in cleaner growing conditions and away from things like sediment and mud
• Helps prevent mussel socks from becoming buried, tangled or damaged at the bottom
• Better allows farmers to access the mussels throughout the 18-24 month growing cycle
Harvest-ready long lines can contain upwards of 2 tonnes of mussels each! As we said, "Oh, buoy" indeed!
