The PEI Home and School Federation presents two Extra Mile Awards annually, one in the Eastern school region and a second in the Western school region.

Congratulations to Lesley Cousins! David Schult, President, PEIHSF, presents an award of recognition at Kinkora Regional High School on March 11th.

Always willing to meet, listen, and follow up, she facilitates meetings, supports problem-solving, and keeps open and consistent communication with families. Parents, students, and staff trust her. Her approachable, student-centered mindset makes her a trusted point of contact for students, staff, and parents alike. People know they will be heard, respected, and supported.

She builds trusting relationships and responds to each student’s emotional, social, and academic needs. She listens with patience and with fairness, always responding with empathy and solutions that put students first. Her pride, compassion, and unwavering commitment remind us what it truly means to go the extra mile.

As those who know her best have said, she has a profound impact on her students—not just academically, but socially and emotionally. She has a natural gift for connecting with diverse learners and advocating for their needs, and her compassion and sensitivity make her a vital support for students, parents, and colleagues alike. She truly exemplifies what it means to go the extra mile; her dedication, advocacy, and genuine care make a lasting difference every day.

Her teaching philosophy says it best: “Every student can learn—just not on the same day or in the same way.” She acts out of love—for her students, her colleagues, and her school.

Lesley truly embodies the Kinkora motto: “Once a Blazer, Always a Blazer.”

Congratulations to Jill Burry! David Schult, President, PEIHSF, presents an award of recognition at Stonepark Intermediate School on February 25th (Pink Shirt Day).

Stonepark students, parents, and educators say this about Jill....

Jill brings remarkable energy and positivity to Stonepark. Her laughter fills the halls, her “woot woots” brighten any room, and her dance moves — well, let’s just say they’re legendary. In a middle school, that kind of joy is not a small thing. Throughout it all, she reminds students that it’s okay to take risks, have fun, and be themselves.

She is patient, empathetic, and deeply caring — someone who meets every student with respect and unwavering commitment. Because of this educator, the school is stronger, the community is kinder, and students are inspired to believe in themselves.

She makes a point of knowing every student — their name, their story, their needs — often before they even walk through the door. And perhaps the highest praise of all comes from the students, who have affectionately given her the honorary title of “Mama Jill.”

BULLYING IN SCHOOLS IS A COMMUNITY FAILURE....

FIVE FACES OF BULLYING .......... Bullying is the opposite of hospitality. Instead of bringing someone in, it pushes them out. Instead of offering safety and belonging, it weaponizes vulnerability. Bullying tells the child who is “different” because of how they learn, look, or where they come from, the message that they do not belong here. When a child is mocked on the bus, isolated on the playground, or targeted online, they are not only being hurt by another child; they are failed by a community that has not yet made belonging a shared, non‑negotiable standard.​
