The Kiwanis Club of Charlottetown has once again generously purchased four sets of season tickets to the PEI Symphony Orchestra concerts this year which they have donated to the PEI Registered Music Teachers Association. We have four tickets to give away to students of PEIRMTA members for the PEISO’s first concert of the year—Belonging—on Sunday, October 18th at 2:30pm at the Confederation Centre, featuring guest soloist and principal flautist, Morgan Saulnier. While seating is assigned, any of these student tickets can be re-assigned if another ticket is purchased (ie- if a parent wants to sit with their child). Individuals under 16 must be accompanied by an adult; student tickets are valid up to age 30 with ID.

Congratulations to one of my students who will be receiving a Gold Medal from the The Royal Conservatory in November! This student received the highest mark for his RCM Level 6 piano exam out of the four Atlantic provinces in the 2025-26 academic year.

Students - this is a valuable performing opportunity for you! If you have repertoire ready for the first recital on Saturday October 17, consider signing up! Sponsored by the PEI Registered Music Teachers Association, student performance fees and audience admission are charged to offset the costs of the using a professional concert venue and instrument. This year, I am posting a thought of the week in my front entry for my students to contemplate and enjoy. Last week's quote was from Henry Ford: "Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right." This week's message is from Plato: " Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything." and a bonus inspirational card which reads "Your potential is Endless." Piano teaching is so much more than the notes on a page, technical facility, and the interpretation of musical details. It is also about encouraging each student to do their best no matter where they are in their musical development or their life circumstances.

This will be an incredibly inspiring recital featuring a 16-year old piano student, who won an Atlantic Young Artist competition, and who now gets to give a concert tour as part of the prize. Here are all the details:

Atlantic Young Artist Competition winner

The Atlantic Young Artist Competition and Tour are projects of the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers’ Associations and its provincial counterparts in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Prince Edward Island. The competition is open to pianists, singers, and instrumentalists between the ages of 16 and 25 (27 for singers) who are currently studying with a Registered Music Teacher.

In April, sixteen year-old pianist Jenny Chen was chosen from three accomplished competitors at the Atlantic Young Artist Competition, which took place at Mount Allison University. As the 2026 competition winner, Jenny has embarked on a concert tour of the region, with recitals in Sackville, Halifax, Fredericton, and Charlottetown. We are pleased to co-present her recital at UPEI Department of Music with the PEI Registered Music Teachers Association.

Jenny started her piano study at the age of five and became a student of Professor Lynn Stodola in 2018. She has since been the recipient of a large number of prestigious awards. At her recital in Charlottetown, Jenny will present a varied program of works, including “Adagietto” from Three Pieces for Piano (Mozetich), Sonata in B-flat Major, K. 333 (Mozart), Estampes (Debussy), and two works by Chopin: Étude in C minor, Op. 10, No. 12 and Scherzo in B Minor, Op. 20.

Venue: Steel Recital Hall (UPEI campus)

Admission: by donation (all proceeds will help defray the cost of Jenny’s tour)
