📚 FRIDAY — APPLICATION VOCABULARY

Today’s term: PREREQUISITE

What does prerequisite mean when you’re researching a university program?

A prerequisite is a requirement that must be satisfied beforehand.

Depending on the program or course, this could include:

Previous academic study: A program may require a particular subject, credential or educational background.

A specific course: You may need to complete one course before taking another.

Other specified requirements: Some programs may require particular qualifications, relevant experience, a portfolio, language results or other requirements.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Meeting a university’s general admission requirements does not automatically mean you meet every requirement for your chosen program.

KEY TAKEAWAY

Always check the specific program page on the institution’s official website and identify any prerequisites before applying.

Don’t just ask:

“Do I qualify for this university?”

Also ask:

“Do I meet the requirements for this specific program?”

THURSDAY : APPLICATION QUESTION

Can I apply for a master’s program before finishing my bachelor’s degree?

Yes, in many cases, you can.

Some Canadian universities and graduate programs allow students to apply while they are still completing their bachelor’s degree.

But this does not mean you can start the master’s without completing the required undergraduate credential.

If you are admitted before graduation, your offer may include conditions requiring you to complete your bachelor’s degree and satisfy other outstanding requirements before enrolment.

Before applying:

1. Check eligibility: Confirm that the specific program accepts applications from students who are still completing their bachelor’s degree.

2. Read the admission requirements: Check the academic requirements and any conditions that may apply.

3. Follow document instructions: The institution may request your current academic record during the application and final/official documents later.

KEY TAKEAWAY

You may not need to wait until graduation to apply.

But always check the requirements of the specific master’s program before submitting your application.

WEDNESDAY: DID YOU KNOW?

Applying to a Canadian university? Don’t assume the entire university has one application deadline.

Application deadlines can vary depending on:

Program - Different programs may have different deadlines.
Level of study - Undergraduate and graduate admissions can follow different timelines.
Intake - Fall, winter and summer admission periods may have different deadlines.
Applicant category - In some cases, deadlines can also vary by applicant status or category.

What should you do?

Always check the official university website for the deadline that applies to your specific program, intake and applicant category.

Don’t rely on a deadline you saw for another program, even if it’s at the same university.

SAME UNIVERSITY. DIFFERENT PROGRAMS. DIFFERENT DEADLINES.

Save this post and double-check your application timeline before submitting.

TUESDAY : MISTAKE TO AVOID

Applying to several programs? Don’t automatically send the exact same statement to every one.

Programs can ask different questions, emphasize different requirements and expect applicants to address different information. A statement that works for one application may therefore contain material that is irrelevant to another.

Before submitting:

1. Read the prompt: Answer what you’re actually being asked.
2. Research the program: Understand the features relevant to your application.
3. Tailor your response: Connect your genuine experiences, interests and goals to the specific question.
4. Review carefully: Check that you’ve answered the prompt and used the correct program and institution details.

Tailoring does NOT mean changing your story or inventing experiences.

Keep your information truthful. Change how you present the relevant parts based on what the specific application asks you to address.

TAILOR IT. DON’T FABRICATE IT.

MONDAY : APPLICATION TIP

Found the university’s general admission requirements? Don’t stop there.

Your specific program may have additional requirements, different academic thresholds, required documents, prerequisites, assessments or its own application deadline.

A better research sequence is:

1. Find the exact program you want to apply to.
2. Review the university-level admission information relevant to you.
3. Read the specific program page carefully.
4. Confirm the program’s requirements, documents and deadlines before preparing your application.

The university website tells you where to start. The specific program page tells you what you actually need to check for that application.

Save this post for your application research.

Friday - Application Vocabulary: CONDITIONAL ADMISSION

Receiving an offer doesn’t always mean there is nothing left for you to do.

A conditional admission or offer means your admission depends on satisfying specific condition(s) established by the institution.

Those conditions can vary and may relate to things such as:

âś“ Academic results
âś“ Completion of your current credential
âś“ Final or official academic documents
âś“ Language requirements
âś“ Specified prerequisite courses

The most important document is your own offer letter.

Read the conditions carefully. Note any deadlines. Follow the institution’s instructions.

If something isn’t clear, contact the institution rather than guessing.

📌 Application vocabulary matters because understanding the terminology helps you understand exactly what is being asked of you.

Save this term for later.

Thursday: Application Question

How many Canadian universities should I apply to?

There isn’t a magic number.

Applying to more universities isn’t automatically a better strategy and choosing an arbitrary number isn’t much of a strategy either.

Instead, build your shortlist around four things:

Goals: Does the program align with what you want to study and where you want your career to go?

Fit: Do you meet the program’s admission requirements?

Budget: How many applications can you realistically afford to prepare and submit?

Time: How many applications can you research and prepare properly?

Your shortlist should be intentional, not numerical.

Focus your time and effort on programs that genuinely fit your goals, qualifications and circumstances.

Have an application question you’d like answered next Thursday? Drop it in the comments.

Wednesday: Did you know?

Getting admitted doesn’t necessarily mean you’re automatically considered for every scholarship.

Some scholarships provide automatic consideration to eligible applicants.

Others require a separate application, form or specified process.

And scholarship deadlines may be different from the deadline for admission.

That means scholarship research shouldn’t be an afterthought once your university application is finished.

When you find an award you’re interested in, check three things:

Eligibility criteria → Application process → Deadline

Never assume one application covers everything.

Save this post and check the scholarship instructions for the universities you’re considering.

Tuesday: Mistake to Avoid

A higher university ranking doesn’t automatically mean a better choice for you.

Rankings can provide useful information but they should never be your entire decision-making strategy.

Look deeper.

Does the program actually match your goals?
Can you manage the total cost?
What academic and student support is available?
What opportunities does the program provide?
Is the location suitable for your circumstances?

The goal isn’t simply to attend the highest-ranked university you can find.

The goal is to identify programs that make sense for your academic goals, career direction, finances and circumstances.

Research. Compare. Then decide.
