The New Black: Celebrating & Educating.
We chose this theme as a way to engage the community in a dialogue around defining or redefining Blackness in PEI in terms of the social determinants of health and wellness, and challenging the preconceived notions of others about who Black people are or what Black culture is.
Our BHM activities celebrate Black history, culture, and arts, but also educate people about the issues faced by the Black community. The Black community in PEI is growing and its members need to connect with one another, and to find or create opportunities within the larger community. Our BHM program will help to create these opportunities and address these issues through cultural engagement, the celebration of local talent and through educational activities for both the general public and in schools.
Our main goal every year for Black History Month is to give opportunities to members of the Black community to realize ideas that will foster and create a sense of community on the Island. Our BHM events and activities are structured to create an opportunity for empowerment, solidarity, acknowledgement, and cross-cultural learning, as well as an opportunity to demonstrate, educate, and inform, fostering inclusivity with the broader Island community. The activities of the month are structured inclusively to accommodate all members of the Island community in discussions that will foster inclusion and equity within the community at large. It also provides an opportunity to strengthen the ties and bonds across all Island communities through solidarity, knowledge exchange, and reflection.
