August 1st is Emancipation Day in Canada.
It marks the actual day in 1834 that the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 came into effect across the British Empire.
Canadians are not always aware that Black and Indigenous Peoples were once enslaved on the land that is now Canada. Those who fought enslavement were pivotal in shaping our society, our education spaces and our workplaces to be as diverse they are today.
Black Cultural Society of PEI is hosting a celebration tomorrow in Rochford Square in Charlottetown. It's a great opportunity to learn more and connect with the Black community here on PEI!

Earlier this week, we posted a video of the Pride flag being raised at Charlottetown City Hall. And we received quite a few hateful comments on that post.
While we recognize that some of them were likely bots and that the internet can be a place for people to air their grievances more than it can be about community, it shouldn't surprise anyone that we're huge supporters of Pride.
For almost 30 years, Workplace Learning PEI has always been about building community, helping people develop skills that increase their inclusion in the workplace, and supporting employers in creating workplaces where people excel and PEI's economy thrives.
And now as always, hateful comments will be blocked, banned and reported.

Have you been seeing information about Disability Pride Month?
Disability Pride Month has been celebrated in the United States since July 1990 when the Americans with Disabilities Act came into law. Today, it is celebrated around the world, including in Canada, where 22 per cent or 6.2 million Canadians live with a disability.
We'll be talking more about Disability Pride Month as July rolls out.
