If your PGWP has been refused , whether related to Portage College or any other reason , and you're now weighing your study options, there are three main pathways worth understanding.
Option 1: If your budget allows, take a full two-year program in an in-demand occupation such as early childhood education, nursing, or a skilled trade. This is the most straightforward route with a clean PR pathway.
Option 2: If you have strong language ability, consider studying ECE or CCA in Nova Scotia alongside French. This program doesn't come with PGWP eligibility, but your French ability qualifies you for a work permit, and completing the program makes you eligible for the International Graduates in Demand stream , meaning you can pursue PR without needing any work experience.
Option 3: If French isn't an option for you, you can still become eligible for the same Nova Scotia stream, but it involves extending your stay with another study permit and securing a job in your field of study within the 24-hour working rights that permit allows. If an employer is willing to offer you full-time work, that becomes your route into a PNP file.
Each of these paths suits a different situation, so it's worth understanding which one applies to you.
We also want to remind candidates affected by the Portage College situation: Skylux International will not charge you anything for the study permit process. You only pay the embassy fees directly, and if you've already paid an agent commission, we'll refund that amount to you in full.
If you'd like to explore any of these options, comment STUDY below and our experts will reach out to you, or call us directly at 416-477-9903.

Here's a number that deserves more attention: 14 lakh work permits are set to expire in 2026, and a large share of those holders have no clear path to permanent residency right now.
Think about what got them here. Most paid upward of $45,000 in tuition fees to study in Canada. They worked part-time jobs while studying and paid taxes on that income. Many then moved onto a work permit, took on extra shifts, and paid taxes again , all while contributing to the Canadian economy.
Now, with 2026 approaching, a significant number of them are facing an expiry date with no defined next step.
If your work permit is expiring in 2026, or you know someone in this situation, this is the year to have a real conversation about your PR options , before the deadline decides for you.
We'd like to hear your thoughts on this. What do you think should change? Let us know in the comments.

If you've received a refusal from Portage College Alberta and you're considering reapplying, we'd like to help , and it won't cost you anything to do it through us.
The entire admissions process is free. When you apply for your study permit, the only payment you make is the embassy's own fee of $150 , we don't add anything on top of that.
If you previously paid a commission to an agent, we'll return 100% of that amount to you as well.
We understand how unfortunate a refusal can feel, especially after everything you've already put into the process. While we can't control the outcome of every application, we can make sure that trying again doesn't add financial pressure on top of it.

Here's a piece of information that surprises a lot of our clients: you can hold a work permit and a study permit at the same time in Canada.
A common misconception is that applying for a study permit invalidates your existing work permit, or that you can't work full-time until your study permit is approved. Neither of these is accurate.
In reality, you're able to work full-time and study full-time simultaneously. This opens up the option to enroll in a program that can make you directly eligible for permanent residency, without putting your current work status at risk.
If this applies to your situation and you'd like to know which programs qualify, comment STUDY below and our experts will reach out to you.

If your work permit is close to expiring and you're not sure what comes next , you're not alone. This is one of the most common situations we see, and there's more than one way to handle it.
Recently, a few of our clients were in this exact spot. Instead of losing status, they enrolled in a completely online program at a public college , affordable fees, part-time work allowed , and structured it around the field they needed for their PR application.
Result? They already have their Invitation to Apply for permanent residency.
Every situation is different, and this pathway won't fit everyone. But if your permit is expiring soon, it's worth having a proper conversation before your options run out.

We came across a Spousal Open Work Permit refusal recently, and the level of detail in the refusal letter is something every applicant should be aware of.
The candidate had applied to extend his SOWP based on a payroll arranged through another consultant, claiming a role as a social media manager. The visa officer, however, went far deeper than most applicants expect.
First, his education didn't match a two-year hospitality diploma, with no background related to social media or marketing.
Second, the company's own social media accounts showed only two posts a day, with no real consistency ,not what you'd expect from an active social media manager.
Third, the payroll listed his wage at $18 an hour, well below the median and even the low-wage threshold for that occupation.
The result was a refusal, though the candidate remains eligible to reapply once genuinely qualified.
If you're extending or applying for a Spousal Open Work Permit, the job behind your application needs to be genuine , not just documented. Visa officers are clearly cross-checking far more than people assume.
If you think this could help someone, please share it ,it might save them from a costly refusal.

We want to share something that happened with a group of candidates we came across recently, because we think it could genuinely protect someone reading this.
They ran a payroll for their PNP through an immigration consultant in Mississauga. Everything moved forward as expected , PNP approved, then PR approved, Portal 1, Portal 2, COPR, and finally their PR card.
A year later, all of it was cancelled.
The reason wasn't something they did , it was uncovered inside the same firm that had processed their PNP. When authorities investigated, candidates who couldn't prove they were genuinely employed lost their PR entirely.
This is a reminder that PR approval isn't always the finish line. If you or someone you know is currently running a payroll for a PNP application, please watch the full video and share it β it could save someone's status down the line.
