🌱The first edition of the Family Herbal Walk was a success. Check out the photos and look how involved, interested and engaged the kids became. Thanks for Natalia, Ethan, Tristan and Audrey, Linda and Jyoti for coming. We were on the hunt for plants that have 3 leaves and can be mistaken for poison ivy. We had a chance to look with magnifying glass at features of mushrooms and plants. It was a busy walk in many ways. Definitely, there will be more family walks through the season next year.

Thank you Emilia, Jyoti and Magda for coming again to the Herbal Walk. The weather was just perfect for exploring medicinal mushrooms. First, we tasted fried Chicken of the Woods that I prepared in the morning. We gathered some Turkey Tail and Birch Polypore. We have smelled, touched, and looked through a magnifying glass at different mushrooms. It was a great pleasure to share my knowledge with such an observant and curious group.
Next Sunday is the Family Herbal Walk. Register the adults and bring the kids for free. Link in the bio to book.

Thanks to the participants of the last Herbal Walk, who braved the heat and came. We made plenty of stops in the shade, where the light breeze was cooling us. We covered the shortest route but managed to gather many flowers for a herbal bath or foot bath. We collected flowers of red, white and sweet clover, goldenrod, purple loosestrife, mugwort, yarrow, boneset and heal-all. With the last two plants we made tisanes. Heal-all made a pleasant tisane, while boneset tasted absolutely awful. However, both of them are great to collect for a herbal bath. We made moth repelling bundles to place in closets. And in a true Slavic tradition we made flower crowns.

You collect MUGWORT once it starts to flower. It is quite easy to miss the flowers, unless you look closer at the plant. The right timing is not obvious because its flowers are small, pale and green-brownish in colour. During the last Herbal Walk, we highlighted mugwort’s properties against parasites that might sneak into the intestines and disturb the microbiome environment. You can use mugwort fresh or dried to make a tisane. It is a good idea to use it as a spice to flavour meat and fish dishes. Historically, in the Roman times and in the Middle Ages the leaves of mugwort were placed under the feet to relieve cramps and fatigued feet. You might try the last application during your walk as the plant grows along the paths and roads.

Goldenrod is very helpful in establishing and maintaining a healthy microbiome in your guts by making the environment there unfriendly to fungus and yeast. It is also very effective in calming infections caused by candida anywhere in the body.

With its bright yellow flowers, goldenrod will brighten up any day, even the most gloomy one. It grows in open spaces and along the roads. You will find it almost anywhere at this time of the year. Nature will provide goldenrod flowers up until the frost appears.

When you harvest goldenrod, gather only the top part of the plant and look for freshly open flower clusters. They will dry best for winter and make a very delicious, mild tasting tisane.

Thanks to all who came out to the walk this weekend. The weather worked in our favour and it ended up being a beautiful day walking through the meadows. We learned about plants that support the Microbiome, with Purple Loosestrife (anti-bacterial), Golden Rod (anti- fungal) & Mugwort (anti-parasitic) as our stars. There is so much that surrounds us, right in our back yards, gifts from nature, here to support us. If you want to start learning about the beautiful world of plants and all they have to offer come and join us on a walk. The next one is in 2 weeks, Sunday the 22nd of August, where we will be collecting plants to make Herbal Baths.
