Thank you to Louis Ducsharm from the Camrose Public Library for joining us last night and giving us a very informative presentation on guerilla gardening and what it might look like in our community!

Next week’s event on August 13, 7pm at the Stoney Creek Centre will be the City Bird Announcement with the Bird Friendly City Committee. Come celebrate the new City Bird of Camrose and learn all about our new mascot!

Thank you to Dr. Dayna Goldsmith for coming to talk last night about avian influenza and teaching us how it’s transmitted, why it’s important as well as how we can help prevent the spread!

With so much rainfall already this year, and so many pests around, we decided to shift the presentation away from drought stress treatments as we most likely won’t experience a drought this summer and talk about how to keep pests away from flower gardens.

In light of the recent flooding event in Camrose, the presentation will shift its focus slightly toward more information about how the City has been responding to the flooding.

Between May 30 and July 2, the City of Camrose received almost 270 mm of rain, which is more than 3 times the amount that the City typically receives during this time. As a result, the City opened the Emergency Coordination Centre on June 29, and spent much of the next week dealing with the direct and indirect impacts of these major rainfall events. Come to the Stoney Creek Centre to hear more about the 2026 flood events, and what the City has done and is doing to protect the public!

These tiny, energetic birds have a unique flying pattern, making short, bouncy flights between coniferous trees and making calls resembling a toy horn. Red-breasted Nuthatches make their own houses by excavating cavities into dead wood and often put a sticky substance by the entrance to deter predators. Having little fear of humans, they are often observed close-up and are frequent visitors to bird feeders.
