As a new year starts, it’s time to ask what we can do to reach our true potential

As the year continues to fly by we are reaching that point were we start to realize whether we truly understand the material we have been studying in any given subject. Great part is that there is still time to catch up if we feel there are areas in any class that do not seem completely clear. Whether we are in Grade 2 or Grade 12 a little help can go a long way

Goals for getting tutoring seem so obvious, to learn who to do something. The trick is that there are two very different ways to get there. One is to learn how to answer the specific question you are working on. The other is to learn the concept that allows you to answer this type of question. My focus is on the latter, I want to help you reach the point where you no longer need me! The trick is that it takes a little longer and a little more work to answers those first few specific questions when we are working on learning the concept as a whole. But I truly believe that a little extra time pays huge divisions.This is essentially an opportunity to get rid of you teacher (me), how many times in your life would you have loved to have not had to attend a specific class again! You have that opportunity with me!

As we start the second part of the semester and the distractions start to build, it's a great time to take stock of what is going well at school and any areas that might be worth while spending a little extra time on. Soon the distractions will increase and we'll start forgetting about school, enjoying our break and before we know it, we'll be talking about final exams coming up. A little extra time now can make the processes a much simpler and enjoyable (or at least doable ;) one!

Today I'm talking about how little distractions can cause all of us, but especially students, big problems. In general we often let immediate, but minor, issues take up a large portion of our time and energy, while long term, but major, issues are left "for tomorrow". Let's all try to work on at least one of those major issues each week. It makes life so much easier.

The night before a final exam students would do or pay anything to figure out something they don't understand. But together we can work on addressing these types of issues when there still easily managed. Last minute help often means you give a lots and get very little, but early help means you only have to give a little, and you get so much in return!

Hard to believe summer is more than half over, but it is still a great time to play, rest and have fun. It's also a great time to take an hour a week or so, to do some hands-on, engaging educational activities. Not only does this allow them to be prepared for their new grade, but starting the year ahead allows them to be confident, comfortable, and a happy kids at school!
