Carihi Fly Fishing Program

In Carihi Fly Fishing tradition, we were so happy to have had a visit yesterday from Cecil Henley, whose generosity and dedication have been instrumental in founding and funding the fly fishing program.

In a heartfelt tribute to his late wife, Cecil has established the Helen Henley Memorial Award. This prestigious accolade includes three generous cash gifts of $750, $500, and $250 and will be bestowed upon the students who demonstrate not only a deep appreciation for fly fishing but also exemplary citizenship and leadership throughout the year beyond the walls of our fly fishing community. Additionally to these bursaries, each recipient is the owner of a new reel and a handmade fly rod by local fly rod builder Rob Butcher ranging in 4-5wt for their continued angling journeys!

Cecil Henley’s contributions extend far beyond financial support; he has shared his invaluable time, wisdom, and passion for fly fishing with our community. On top of these awards, Cecil most recently donated a cash gift of $750 for a recent sale of a boat from a local community member, Rick. Thank you!

Cecil’s efforts ensure that students at Carihi have the unique opportunity to engage with nature, develop new skills, and build lasting friendships through this enriching activity.

The Helen Henley Memorial Awards stand as a testament to his and Helen’s legacy, encouraging future generations to embody the same virtues of dedication, community spirit, and love for the sport.

We were so pleased to have received some extra rods this year to also acknowledge the three Teaching Assistants that Dr. Mulski was so lucky to have assist her in this semester! A ginormous thanks to Karis, Molly, and Priya for all of their time and efforts!

Big thanks for the all visits this year from Chris and Rand from the Campbell River Fish & Wildlife Association and spending time sharing fly tying demos and their expertise.

Our crew of anglers tied up some fresh elk hair caddis yesterday and today and we’re fired up to get them on the water 🙌

Some highlights to share from the last few weeks with our crew include a big shoutout to Sergeant Mike Newton, Conservation Officer, for coming out and sharing his experiences with us 🙌

Hearing firsthand about the importance of protecting our wildlife and fisheries, educating others, and how acts of stewardship help with giving back to the community were highlights of his back to back visits for both our crews!

Awesome bonus getting a fly tying demo of the Black Nosed Dace for both our groups — always something new to learn and take to the water 👊

Fly Tying Challenge – Now Underway!

We are pleased to share information about a special fly tying challenge honouring the life and legacy of Roderick Haig-Brown, 50 years after his passing in 1976. Roderick's conservation writing, love of fly fishing, and original fly patterns continue to inspire anglers on the water today.

Hosted by a Vancouver Island fly fishing enthusiast Rory Glennie, this challenge invites tiers to reconnect with two of Haig-Brown’s classic patterns—celebrating both tradition and craftsmanship.

🪶 The Challenge: Tie two of Haig-Brown's favourite flies: Steelhead Bee and Coho Blue

The contest is open to all individuals.
No entry fee—completely voluntary.
Prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd, including a chance to win a two-night stay here at the Haig-Brown House Bed & Breakfast.

This is a way to honour a legacy that has shaped generations of fly fishers, while sharing in the artistry and passion of fly tying.
