Ever notice how BJJ class somehow clears your head and sharpens your focus? In our latest piece, we break down whether concentration actually improves through training—and why the steady routine, problem-solving, and controlled pressure help you stay present. Whether you’re a complete beginner or returning after a break, you’ll see how effort, mistakes, and technique come together in a way that builds discipline you can feel off the mat. If you’re curious about what BJJ can do for your mind as much as your body, this one is for you.

Being a BJJ coach means teaching technique… and apparently having nine other jobs. 😂🥋

One minute I’m explaining a sweep. The next, I’m taking song requests, investigating an abandoned water bottle, answering whether three snowflakes mean class is cancelled, and trying to get everyone to look at the camera at the same time.

But my favourite job? Being your biggest fan when something finally clicks. Those moments never get old. 💙💛

Coaches, which job did I miss? And students… please claim your water bottles. 😂

Self-defense doesn’t start with panic—it starts with calm control. In this article, we break down practical self-defense skills that begin with breathing, awareness, and staying composed under pressure, so you can think clearly when it matters. At Grand River BJJ, that mindset fits right into our training: disciplined, technical, and supportive from day one, whether you’re a complete beginner or getting back on the mats. If you want self-defence built on control and confidence—not intimidation—this is the one to read.

If you train BJJ, you already know… 😂

🥋 Purple belts always arrive with perfect timing.
🔥 A “light roll” is never actually light.
🧠 Every “simple technique” has at least 12 steps.
👀 Never make eye contact when the coach says, “Pick someone your size.”
💀 And somehow, the answer to “One more roll?” is always… “Of course.”

Which one are you? Tag the training partner who immediately came to mind! 😂👇
