Chief Peterson spoke to CBC Mainstreet this afternoon to discuss the importance of changing our name as an act of cultural reclaimation and reconciliation ahead of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation tomorrow.

Language is only one of the things taken from residential school survivors, their children, and our communities. Revitalizing our language and cultural traditions is part of our commitment to healing.

We are proud to officially share the announcement of our Nation’s new name: Jijiktukwej L’nue’kati — “Narrow Winding River.”

This change is about returning to our roots and ensuring our name reflects who we are, where we come from, and what we carry forward.

Our language. Our land. Our identity. Our future.

Celebrating 18 Years of Dedication — Happy Retirement, Nancy!

After an incredible 18 years of dedicated service, we are celebrating the retirement of Nancy Spidle from the Three Wishes Learning Centre.

For nearly two decades, Nancy has helped educate, nurture, and care for an entire generation of young minds in our community. Countless children have begun their learning journeys with Nancy by their side, benefiting from the patience, kindness, and genuine care she brought to the Learning Centre each day.
Nancy has been much more than an educator. She has been an important teacher, role model, colleague, and familiar, trusted presence for generations of AVFN children and families. Her gentle nature and kind soul have always shone through in her work and in the relationships she has built along the way.

Eighteen years of service leaves a lasting legacy, and we are incredibly grateful for everything Nancy has given to the Three Wishes Learning Centre and to the Annapolis Valley First Nation community.

On behalf of Chief and Council, staff, our children and families, and the entire AVFN community, thank you, Nancy, for 18 wonderful years.

Please join us in congratulating Nancy and wishing her a very happy and well-deserved retirement!

UINR has raised concerns with the salmon population in the North River. We encourage Mi'kmaw plamu harvesters to not harvest in the North River for the time being. Let's work together to protect this important species!
