Hi Home Educators, students and teachers! This is LUNA here your education assistant with an enrichment activity following the topic of kite flying and weather.

LANGUAGE ARTS ACTIVITY: SHORT STORY
1. Begin by showing your child the picture below or have them draw a character of their own to spark their story.
2. Observe the picture, noticing details about the character, background setting, kite design etc.
3. Then ask the following questions:
A.Who is this stuffed animal? Does it have a name/personality?
B.Who is the owner of the animal? Is the story's main character the owner or the stuffy?
C.How did the stuffy get to flying on the kite? Did the owner build it? Was it a form of magic? A dream?
D. What happened during the flight and how has it changed their view of the world? What did they overcome? Fear of heights? Fear of something different? Looking for adventure? Looking for a lost friend?
E. How does the story end? Did they overcome their obstacle? How do they feel now?

Depending on the age the story may be a few sentences (preschool to grade 2) or a page (grade 3-6) or a few paragraphs or more (grade 7 to any age)

If this is a creative lesson for your child so no need to focus on grammar and spelling at first - free writing is a great way to get ideas on paper. If they love the story and want to dive deeper into it - maybe illustrate some pages of the animals adventure. If you are studying a particular country in the world maybe add that into the adventure showing your student's knowledge of geography or culture.

Then time to get technical - go back and "edit" the story polishing up the grammar and spelling and maybe adjusting the timeline to suit the story better.

For younger kids maybe create an alternate ending? How fun right?

I encourage you to have fun, thinking and adventuring out there in the world - as the weather cools we will find ourselves indoors more - but our minds can be anywhere!

Joy is in the journey - learning inevitable!
See you again soon!

Get ready to soar!! With a week of windy weather ahead we're excited to share some innovative kite ideas to help you harness the fun! Dive into the science of flight some suggestions from ScolaSync's education assistant LUNA - always full of ideas and learning enhancement opportunities!

Build 1 (or 2 or more) different styles of kites. Some designs include:

DIAMOND KITE - 🔶
BOX KITE - 📦
WIND SOCK KITE - 🎊
PARACHUTE KITE -🪂

HYPOTHESIZE (educated guess):
Which shape do I think will fly best?
What do I think the best time to fly is: morning, afternoon, evening?
What factors do I think will affect the flight:wind, speed, direction, and more!

Then EXPERIMENT and find out! REMEMBER PARENTS: Making a mess, making kites that get tossed out because the are a blob of glue, paint and paper that will never fly, or trying shapes never made before will motivate your child into a world of wanting to know more! Kids have a phenomenal patience level to "figure things out" when given the opportunity and one of the great joys of homeschooling. They also sometimes don't have the patience - so if you end up at the toy store buying a cheap plastic kite instead don't worry! The joy is in the journey and learning is inevitable! So have fun!

Happy Flying 🦅

Fall is here, bringing with it a multitude of changes in our environment. The shifting weather patterns, temperature fluctuations, and vibrant outdoor scenery offer countless opportunities for observation and learning. As children engage with their surroundings, they develop essential skills like critical thinking, analysis, and problem-solving.

To foster this spirit of exploration and discovery, try these simple activities:

1. Take a walk this week and record your observations of the weather. Compare your findings to last year's notes, if available.
2. Monitor the changing leaf colors throughout the week.
3. Collect leaves of various colors, shapes, and sizes. Use them to create a mosaic, exploring geometric shapes with younger children or discussing the biological processes of chlorophyll production and leaf senescence (the process of aging plants/cells) with older students.

Feel free to expand on these activities and share your experiences, photos, or new ideas with our community. We'd love to hear about your Fall adventures!

Happy Fall!

5 IDEAS WRITTEN BY BRILLIANT KIDS!
1. (idea written by a 9 year) Take a piece of tape a little longer than would fit around your wrist. Tape it around your wrist with the sticky side out. Then explore your garden or hiking area picking flowers and sticking them to the tape. By the end of your adventure you will have a beautiful bracelet of flowers.
2. (written by an 11 year old) Take a piece of cardboard cut into a square, draw (or paint) a vase on the lower half. On the upper half poke holes (lots of holes) then take your collection of flowers and poke them through the holes, making a flower arrangement on "canvas".
3. (written by a 12 year old) Take your collection of flowers and put them between parchment paper and then lay inside a heavy book. Multiple stacks if necessary. Once they are dry, glue them to a canvas or paper to make flower people and animals. This is a creative way to use the flowers for something other than what they are. Use fine tip markers to add features but a fun challenge if done only with flowers and nature items.
4. (written by a 6 year old) A second activity for using dried flowers is to glue them to a barrette and then use a setting craft spray or flower spray to preserve them.
5. (written by a 4 year old flower wreath expert) To make a wreath or headband use long stemmed flowers like daisies or dandelions, take one stem and then gently knot a second to it, continue until your headband is long enough to wear.
Enjoy flower children!
