Nature Update! It's that time of year again where kiddos thrive in the outdoor classroom! On June 15, 6 classes had a chance to explore, plant, learn, create, and get their hands dirty alongside some fantastic volunteer parents (thanks!) The steady stream of questions & comments ("can I eat that?" "my brother ate one of those" "my Mom leaves me a list and I water what she puts on the list" "can I take off my shoes?" and, "what bacteria interacts with roots to fix the nitrogen?" (!!!!!) was astounding. Hats off to the Mom who leaves the list!
Come join our garden parties, whether to learn about new plants, contribute to this special space, or participate in a classroom garden day! Reach out @ [email protected]

Nature Update! Say hello to our spectacular lupine, now flowering in the garden! A hardy perennial in Canada, the lupine grows in many regions, including Hispanic regions of the world, a to wild Albertan grasslands and beyond. You can trek up into higher altitudes of the Andes to see her, or stand in the shade of her (sometimes) 8 m tall cousin in Oaxaca, Mexico. She also has relatives in Africa and the Mediterranean, and as part of the legume family she'll fix nitrogen into your soil, a fine companion plant. Just watch out, she gets wild when introduced - just ask Iceland. Cherished by many, from the Roman to the Incan Empire onward, and now students at Dalhousie Elementary! Yesterday classes took turns in their outdoor classroom learning about growing food, ecosystems, and the plants in our garden. Come join our garden parties, whether to learn about new plants, contribute to this special space, or participate in a classroom garden day! Reach out @ [email protected]

Welcome to Dalhousie Elementary School!
Our Parent Council realizes how cool learning a second language is!
The elementary program has a 50/50 split in instructional time between English and Spanish. This allows students to build fluency in both languages. Children learn to understand and respond appropriately in Spanish in a range of everyday situations.

Dalhousie Families! The year is almost over and we will be looking for a new nature space lead. I (Heather, for those of you who haven't met me) will be staying on as a readily available helping hand. This role has been incredible and I am thankful for your trust in me to transform our space and bring a bit more natural wonder to little eyes and hearts. It is peaceful, relaxing, and at times pure fitness lugging hoses. Days spent planting with children and witnessing the wonder in action brings a quiet reassurance knowing kiddos can slow down and connect with their outside world. Please reach out to me directly for info. We are at a point where the time commitment is significantly lower and care / maintenance will be straightforward. I am also always ready to lend a green-ish thumb. Thank you again for all of the support! ~Heather

2026/2027 School year, our School Council / Parent Society will need Chairs & Co-Chairs (or vice chairs). Total of 4 if we include co-chairs (they're helpful to share the work)!
In Alberta, while "School Councils" act in an advisory capacity, "Parent Societies" are separate, legally incorporated bodies responsible for fundraising and managing finances to support school initiatives. WE ALL WORK TOGETHER!
Typical duties for School Council Chair include: organizing meetings; ensuring responsibilities for council members are clearly defined; striving to ensure the diversity of the school community is represented on council; communicating regularly with the school principal; ensuring regular communication with the school community; ensuring an annual report is submitted to the Board of Trustees; and staying informed about policies that impact school councils (the Key Communicator really helps with this).
We have two because of governance and rules with fundraising... The Education Act / Societies Act.
The Parent Society Chair is also critical with knowledge of activities of the Association, carrying out duties assigned by the Association in accordance with Bylaws. Running meetings, including preparing agendas. The chair is the chief spokesperson for the PS, unless otherwise delegated, is involved in all Association communications and reviews any communications to the membership, parent body, School community or public prior to distribution.
Email us for more info: [email protected] [email protected]
*Co Chairs and delegates can lead meetings as well, collab is always the easiest!
