You agree on one thingโฆ and somehow by tomorrow, the terms have changed.
Thatโs the exhausting part of high-conflict coparenting: the constant moving target.
You find yourself explaining. Defending. Re-explaining. Trying to prove what was already agreed to.
Stop chasing the moving target.
Keep your communication brief.
Stay child-focused.
Document agreements.
And when the story changes, go back to the written parenting plan or court order.
You need to stay consistent.

One of the hardest things to learn after a separation is this:
Co-parenting does not mean unlimited access to you.
You can respond to what actually involves the children without responding to the insults, accusations, bait, interrogation, or attempts to pull you back into the fight.
You donโt have to explain every decision.
You donโt have to defend yourself against every accusation.
And you definitely donโt have to respond immediately just because they sent the message.
Sometimes the healthiest response is simply:
โIโll respond to the portion of your message that relates to the children.โ

Your first instinct might be to say:
โYou always do this.โ
โThe kids were expecting you.โ
โYou canโt just cancel whenever you feel like it.โ
But in co-parenting, the message you WANT to send and the message you SHOULD send are often two very different things.
Instead, keep it short:
โThanks for letting me know. Iโll make arrangements for the kids.โ
If itโs becoming a pattern:
โIโve noted that youโre unable to exercise your scheduled parenting time this weekend. Please provide more notice for future changes.โ
And when documentation matters:
โFor documentation purposes, youโve advised today that you will not be exercising your scheduled parenting time from Friday to Sunday. The children will remain in my care.โ
You donโt need to argue.
You donโt need to remind them how many times theyโve done it.
You donโt need to convince them to be a parent.
Respond calmly. Document the facts. Keep the children out of the conflict.
And keep your own private record of the cancellation.
