๐โ๏ธ OUR YOUNG ENGINEERS WERE HARD AT WORK TODAY! ๐งฑ๐ก
As part of our How Things Work Week, we welcomed Young Engineers Calgary NW to Discovery Kids for a hands on LEGO engineering workshop and our kids absolutely loved it!
Todayโs challenge was to build their very own working LEGO cars! ๐ The kids followed step by step instructions, searched for the pieces they needed, learned how the different gears and moving parts worked together, and then put their creations to the test!
One of our favourite parts was watching what happened when things didnโt work the first time. ๐คโ๏ธ Instead of giving up, the kids tested their cars, made adjustments, asked questions, helped one another, and tried again until they figured it out. Soon enough, LEGO cars were cruising across the room! ๐๐จ
We saw so many great moments throughout the morning from friends helping friends troubleshoot their designs, to children independently working ahead, to everyone adding their own creative customizations once their cars were complete. Some even figured out how to make their cars do wheelies! ๐
A huge thank you to Young Engineers Calgary NW for bringing such a fun, engaging, and educational STEM experience to our program! ๐
At Discovery Kids, this is what redefining out-of-school care looks like giving children opportunities to build, experiment, problem-solve, create, collaborate, and most importantly, have FUN while learning! ๐ง ๐งฑโจ

๐๐ฆ One Last Ride on the Thunder Run! ๐ฆ๐
Todayโs adventure took us to Village Square Leisure Centre, and there was one thing we absolutely had to do experience the iconic Thunder Run one last time before it comes down at the end of the month! ๐๐
After lunch, it was time to hit the water! There were lots of twists, turns, tubes, big splashes, and excitement as we enjoyed our final Thunder Run rides. ๐๐
The fun didnโt stop there! We explored the water park, spent time swimming and playing in the Splash Zone, raced down the smaller blue waterslide, and squeezed in as much water fun as possible before it was time to head home.
It was pretty special getting to experience the Thunder Run one last time and say goodbye to a Village Square favourite while making another great summer memory together! ๐๐๐
๐ฆโ๏ธ Water Wonders Week โ Making a Splash Around Calgary! โ๏ธ๐ฆ
What an amazing Water Wonders Week so far! We spent the week exploring South Calgary Outdoor Pool, Highwood Outdoor Pool, and Mount Pleasant Outdoor Pool, all part of the Calgary Outdoor Swimming Pools Assoc - COSPA. We loved getting out into our community, supporting our neighbourhood pools, and seeing what each one had to offer! ๐โโ๏ธ๐๐
The kids made the most of every visitโzooming down waterslides, practising swimming and diving skills, playing water football, floating on colourful floaties, having splash wars, and creating their own games together. There were lots of laughs, big splashes, and some pretty awesome slow-motion moments along the way! ๐ฆ๐๐คฟ
We even ended up swimming through a Calgary downpour at Mount Pleasant, but with the pool so wonderfully warm, nobody seemed to mind! ๐ง๏ธ๐ A huge thank you to all of the lifeguards at the pools we visited for being so friendly, welcoming, and helpful with our group.๐ค๐
It was such a fun week of swimming, friendship, confidence, and summer adventures. Thank you to the Calgary Outdoor Swimming Pools Association for giving us such wonderful neighbourhood pools to explore and enjoy! โ๏ธ๐ฆ๐

๐ชโจ What a Way to End Festival & Carnival Week! โจ๐ช
What an incredible week of summer fun! Our Festival & Carnival Week was filled with creativity, laughter, exciting experiences, and plenty of memories along the way. ๐
We got creative making our own puffy-paint ice cream creations ๐ฆ๐จ, followed by the real thing as everyone designed their very own ice cream sundaes with all their favourite toppings! ๐จ๐โจ
And what better way to end our week than with a HUGE adventure at the Royal Duck Pop-Up Inflatable Bounce House! ๐ฅ๐๐ฐ We bounced, climbed, balanced, explored, tackled giant slides and obstacles, and made the most of every last minute!
After all that excitement, we slowed things down, grabbed some popcorn, got cozy, and finished our Festival & Carnival Week with The Greatest Showman. ๐ฟ๐ฌ๐ช
And just like that, the curtain closes on a week filled with big dreams, brave adventures, carnival magic, laughter, and memories worth celebrating. Because sometimes the greatest show isnโt the one you watch itโs the one you get to be part of. ๐๐ชโจ
๐โจ To End Our Amazing All Around the World Week, We Travelled Back in Time at Heritage Park! ๐๐ค
What a fantastic way to wrap up our All Around the World Week! Today, our Discovery Kids adventurers stepped back in time at Heritage Park, where history came to life through hands on experiences, interactive learning, and exciting rides.
The children explored historic buildings, met friendly village characters, learned about beekeeping and even sampled fresh honey straight from the honeycomb! ๐ฏ๐ They also participated in meaningful Indigenous programming, creating beautiful fish scale art and medallions while learning about storytelling, culture, and traditions.๐งก๐ชถ๐ฟ๐
Of course, no trip to Heritage Park would be complete without enjoying the midway! From the Ferris wheel ๐ก and merry-go-round ๐ to the Caterpillar Ride ๐and boat swings, โต๏ธthere were smiles, laughter, and so many moments of bravery as the children challenged themselves to try new experiences.
It was the perfect way to celebrate a week of learning about different cultures, history, and communities from around the world. Thank you, Heritage Park, for giving our children a day full of adventure, learning, and memories that will last a lifetime! โค๏ธ๐๐
๐ฅก๐ฅขChina Came to Discovery Kids! ๐ฏ๐งง
After an incredible day exploring the Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre and Chinatown, the adventure continued back at Discovery Kids! ๐จ๐ณโจ Our program was transformed into a celebration of Chinese culture through hands on activities, creativity, and delicious food.๐
The children explored their creativity by making beautiful Chinese lanterns, creating colourful artwork, and diving into a Chinese themed sensory bin that encouraged imaginative play and curiosity. We also enjoyed a relaxing Kung Fu Panda afternoon, giving the children another fun way to connect with Chinese culture through storytelling and entertainment. ๐ผ๐ฎ
To wrap up our day, the children became little chefs as they prepared their own fresh spring rolls for dinner. From carefully softening the rice paper to choosing their fillings and practicing their rolling techniques, everyone took pride in creating a delicious meal they made themselves. Cooking together encouraged independence, fine motor development, and a willingness to explore new foods and traditions.๐ฉโ๐ณ๐ฏ๐งโ๐ณ
Learning comes alive when children can create, explore, and experience cultures in meaningful ways. What an incredible way to bring China to Discovery Kids! ๐จ๐ณ๐โค๏ธ
๐จ๐ณ Around the World Week: Exploring China ๐จ๐ณ
This week, our Around the World adventure took us to the Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre and Chinatown for a day filled with discovery, curiosity, and cultural learning! ๐จ๐ณโจ
The children explored beautiful Chinese artwork, admired fascinating historical artifacts, and were amazed by the intricate handcrafted furniture and detailed exhibits throughout the museum. They also enjoyed learning about Chinese calligraphy, examining a miniature model of the Cultural Centre, and visiting the Calgary Chinese Seniors Centre, where they admired the guardian lion statues and had the opportunity to watch a Tai Chi demonstration.
As we explored Chinatown, we took time to notice the unique architecture, cultural landmarks, and vibrant atmosphere before enjoying a snack together at a nearby playground. Throughout the visit, the children demonstrated outstanding respect by using quiet voices in the museum, asking thoughtful questions, and showing genuine curiosity about the traditions and history they were discovering.
Experiences like these help foster cultural appreciation, encourage meaningful conversations, and inspire children to become curious, respectful global citizens. We are so proud of our young explorers and all they learned during this special adventure! ๐โค๏ธ
