A Humble In’ Creative - News Release - April 25/23

Hi Friends,

Here it is, at long last. We’re launching our first of several new websites. First up, Mark’s self-created Music Education and Coaching Service website, www.markdaum.com which is open for business today.

Throughout Mark’s career, he has helped hundreds of students at all levels dive more deeply into their creative work.

We’re thrilled to bring you this exciting new online service. Please drop by the site, consider ‘Upping Your Game’ and/or sharing this video with someone you may know who might be interested. And if you feel inclined to give us some feedback, please drop us a message.

Thanks much, MJ and Mark.

A BREATHING DISCOVERY
The Vocal Coach, firmly standing perpendicular to the erect student, with one hand on the student’s back and one on the student’s chest, stabilizes the pupil; whereupon the student’s upper torso may begin to feel constricted. (This is a method the coach uses to induce diaphragmatic breathing.). The student compensates by moving the stomach area in and out to capture his/her breath and will easily then find rhythmic air flow into the body and become aware of the feeling of the stomach popping in and out.
The key is to remember the sensation of this and reproducing it regardless of whether the pupil is walking, exercising or idly lying about.
Once this technique of breathing becomes customary, second nature, the student will, be aware of how she/he can have complete control of airflow and will expand the exhale’s capacity for use in long phrasing and held notes.
It is simply the most powerful tool a singer needs.
I hope this helps.
If you liked this advice and have a partner to assist you, try partnering.
Remember that a time will come to confirm your progress in person. Nothing replaces, (excuse the pun), hands on confirmation in the earlier development stage of a singer. Very quickly, this breathing practice will be visible to the trained eye.
You have achieved breath control when you are in charge of you personal exercises any time of day and no one detects.
Have fun with this as your self awareness grows.

There are many things to think about as a student of any instrument, the voice being the most intimate of all.
There’s the way we carry ourselves, our direction, breathing control on exhale, our tongues and relaxing them behind the lower teeth, expressing with our mouths and relaxing into the outer extensions of our range, being faithful to the lyrics (words and content of the meaning), being mindful of why we are singing, acting with authenticity if the lyrics aren’t experiences we have been through, and developing a host of vocal tools; all of which needs to be second nature to us before we hit the stage or the recording studios.
I highly recommend online training to accompany your live vocal teacher because we need direct feedback as we progress to assure we’re not creating poor vocal habits that are harder to undo once they are the norm.
We sing to communicate with our audience and we must embrace vulnerability in performance to effectively and charismatically excel in our chosen genres of creativity.
