We are Canada’s engaged university.

Simon Fraser University would like to acknowledge the Coast Salish peoples of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, on whose unceded traditional territories we live and work on.

Simon Fraser University has received a transformational $40M gift from Ratana and Arran Stephens—the largest in SFU’s history.

In recognition, our new medical school will be named the SFU Stephens Family School of Medicine. This support will help us prepare future doctors, advance research and innovation, and strengthen care for communities across the province.

Opening in August 2026, the school is designed with a clear purpose: to train the next generation of primary-care physicians and improve access to care—from urban centres to rural, remote and Indigenous communities.

We’re deeply grateful to the Stephens family for their vision and commitment to community well-being. Together with the Province of BC, we’re building a healthier future for British Columbians.

As her term comes to an end this June, we're taking a moment to reflect on her impact and thank her for everything that she brought to the university.

Adults with ADHD may pay high price to mask traits and fit in, SFU study finds 06/03/2026

Pretending. Mimicking others. Overpreparing. Avoiding social situations, suppressing impulses to fidget or interrupt, and self-medicating.

New SFU research found 91 per cent of adults with ADHD use these common 'camouflaging’ strategies to get their foot in the door socially. But these same strategies can leave people feeling exhausted, anxious, and depressed.

Add to that the reported feelings of inauthenticity, impostor syndrome, low self-esteem and uncertainty about their identity, and the trade-off to fit in begins to look less like coping, and a lot more like suffering.

“It’s not that adults with ADHD have a distorted way of seeing the world. They’re responding to real social expectations and pressures and using masking to cope.” — Grace Iarocci, psychology professor and co-author of the study.

“We need to understand how difficult their day-to-day life is, and how much cognitive effort or mental energy they're putting into everyday living so we can help them find healthy ways to manage.”

Full story below.

Got beef with beans? SFU study explains why shoppers don’t buy more plant‑based proteins 06/02/2026

What’s the beef with beans?

When it comes to choosing meat versus plant protein at the grocery store, it’s ... complicated.

An SFU researcher peeked into more than 87,000 grocery carts in Canada and Finland to study whether price really is the biggest factor shaping people’s protein preferences. Turns out, a variety of options (or lack thereof) is a pretty important piece of the puzzle.

“With meat, shoppers can usually trade down when prices are higher, choosing ground beef instead of steak, for example. If there are only two or three plant-based options on the shelf, consumers who want those products have fewer cheaper alternatives to switch to,” explains researcher Cameron McRae.

But here’s the good news: You can rack up instant savings just by swapping meat protein for whole foods like beans, lentils and peas two or three times a week, says McRae.

Check out the whole story below.
