🧡 Why Do People Wear Orange on September 30 in Canada?
September 30 is both National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day in Canada.
It is a day to honour Residential School Survivors, remember the children who never returned home, and recognize the lasting impacts of the residential school system.
🧡 Why Orange?
Orange Shirt Day is connected to the story of Phyllis Webstad, a residential school Survivor.
• At age six, she arrived at residential school wearing a new orange shirt
• The shirt was taken away and never returned
• Her experience later inspired Orange Shirt Day and the message “Every Child Matters”
Today, wearing orange is a symbol of remembrance, learning and recognition.
📖 Why September 30 Matters
For more than a century, Indigenous children were separated from their families and sent to residential schools, where many experienced the loss of language, culture and identity.
In 2021, September 30 became a federal statutory holiday to recognize this history and its continuing impacts.
