Did you know that toddlers often play beside other children before they begin playing with them? 💙
This is called parallel play. One child might build with blocks while another sits nearby doing the same thing. They may watch, copy a movement, or exchange a little smile. Those quiet moments are part of how children begin to connect.

You don’t need a special activity to start talking with your baby. 💙
While getting them dressed, changing a diaper, or packing up to go out, try describing what you’re doing in simple words: “Here’s your shirt. One arm in… now the other!”
Pause and notice how your baby responds. A look, a smile, or a little sound can become part of your conversation. These everyday moments are lovely opportunities to connect and introduce language. 🌈

Goodbyes can feel big for little ones. 💙
A small routine at drop-off can help your child know what to expect. Try a hug, the same short goodbye phrase, and a wave each morning. Then let them know when you’ll be back in words they can understand, such as “I’ll see you after daycare.”
Some mornings may still be hard, and that’s okay. Keep your goodbye warm and consistent, and talk with your child’s caregiver about what helps them settle in.

On September 30, SELIS Daycare observes the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.

We honour the children who never returned home from residential schools, the Survivors, and their families and communities.

With young children, meaningful learning can begin through simple, caring conversations about belonging, fairness, and respect. Indigenous-authored stories and age-appropriate resources can help families introduce the meaning of this day with sensitivity.

We invite parents and caregivers to take time to listen, learn, and reflect, while helping little ones understand that their voices and identities deserve respect.
