How I make buying decisions when I’m nervous:

If you've been reading my emails this week, you'll know I'm taking on a few clients for my program, Becoming Limitless.

But if you've been going back and forth about whether or not you want to join and are nervous about investing in my program, I'd love to share some insight into how I make a buying decision.�
There are only 3 reasons that I am nervous about buying something:�
1. I'm not sure if this program/service is the right "method" for me.

This means that I'm questioning if this process being offered actually works.�
If I follow what the coach says, will their process work for me?

It's so easy for people online to claim they have the best program and that everything works, and trust me, I've been burnt HARD by tens of thousands of dollars of coaching programs in the past.

It makes it hard to know if this is the right choice, right?

Here's how I coach myself on this: I search for other people who have been through the program and have great things to say about it.�
I want to know it worked for regular people, not just the superstar clients that already had a head start coming into the program.

I also clearly acknowledge that I am NOT a special snowflake. If something works for someone else, it's possible it would work for me.�
2. I'm not sure if the coach is the right coach for me. Do I trust them?

There are a BILLION coaches online, it feels like.

What makes someone different? How do I know if I can trust them enough to hand them my focus, energy, time and thousands of dollars?

Here's what I do:

I invest time into getting to know them. This can be done through a consult call, but usually, I stalk them quietly�
If they have a podcast, I listen.
If they do videos, I watch.
If they write posts, I read.

I want to see that they've been around for a while, that they haven't changed their program or niche in the last couple of months to meet the latest marketing trend, and that they genuinely pour value into their community.�
3. I'm not sure if I can do it. I doubt myself.�
This one is probably the hardest, and the most painful if I'm being honest.

When the voices in your head are screaming so loud that you can't do it, nothing has ever worked before, you keep wasting your money... it's hard to trust yourself to make a good decision again.

Here's how I coach myself on this:�
I write the name of the program or coach at the top of the page, then below, write ALL the reasons it won't work for me.�
I'm going to share a private journal entry that I did with this on May 26, 2022 when deciding on a $14,000 coaching investment.

[PROGRAM WON'T WORK FOR ME BECAUSE...]

* I won't finish the program�
* I won't show up on the group calls�
* It isn't with the head coach, but with the assistant coach and it's not my first choice�
* I won't put my full effort in�
* I already know everything they teach and I won't learn anything new�
Here is what I recognized from making this list:

1. These reasons are all a reflection on how I showed up in the last program I enrolled in. Even worse, I realized these were all choices I deliberately made to sabotage my own experience.

If I know I have to CHOOSE these things in order for them to happen... why would I? It's on me.

2. These are all just sentences in my brain. There is nothing factual or truthful about them. They are just my opinion,

Seeing them written there like that was a magnifying glass into why I was struggling. My brain needs some TLC, some coaching and some love.�
My brain doesn't always have my best interest at heart.

If you're struggling with your own self doubt, I feel what you're going through.

You must trust yourself, and sometimes that starts with a leap of faith with the right person.�

If you’ve ever joined an online program and felt overwhelmed by how much you have to implement, read this post.

I was laughing about this with a client last week. We were commiserating about the excitement of joining a new program with the intention of watching all the videos, doing all the trainings & completing all the worksheets.

Every week, there will be a small task to take action on.

“I know WHAT to do, but I can’t figure out WHY I’m not doing it”.

I can clearly feel the frustration on a consultation call when I’m speaking with an entrepreneur who has successfully built a multi-six or seven figure business, but can’t figure out how to stick to eating well for more than a week or two.

They don’t want more “how-tos” or “hacks” or recipes - they already know exactly what to do if they want to improve their health.

Where they get stuck is in the never ending on-the-wagon and off-the-wagon loop. They wonder if they’ll ever figure out how to be consistent with their health.

They often think the solution is more accountability, a simpler routine, or more time in their week to stick to their habits.

While these things contribute to consistency, they aren’t the reason you are struggling to stick with it.

You are having a hard time following through because of your tolerance (or rather, intolerance) for discomfort.

When starting a new habit, the newness and excitement are what keep you going and committed.

Let’s use the example of going to bed on time. When you first start this habit, it’s fun to jump in bed on time and be able to say you did it.

You’re excited to wake up tomorrow and see your Apple Watch or your Oura ring tell you that you did a great job.

But what your brain never plans for is the exhausting day at work where you spent half of the day fixated on a negative comment you received from an internet troll.

You’ve spent so much of the day in fight or flight that you just want me time at the end of the day, to escape into the numbness of Instagram doom scrolling, email checking or multiple episodes of Love Is Blind.

Bedtime comes and the idea of telling yourself to go to bed feels ridiculous. You aren’t a child, you don’t have to have a bedtime…

…and your brain tells you it’s okay, you can skip it. It’s not a big deal, you can start again on Monday.

All because the day was draining and now you’re feeling so anxious or spinny from being in your head all day. Zoning out into your phone or on the couch makes all that go away.

But this makes you miss bedtime.

And you stay frustrated with yourself for never being consistent, even though you really wanted it a couple of days ago.

So let’s circle back to HOW to solve this and your discomfort tolerance.

I’ve noticed that the clients of mine who have wonderful success in implementing and sticking to their habits have a high tolerance for uncomfortable or negative emotions, like anxiety, overwhelm, stress, shame etc.

The clients that struggle with consistency are those that are trying to avoid negative feelings all of the time by choosing to do things that make them feel temporarily better, like overeating, or scrolling IG instead of actually feeling their feelings.

So if you were my client, here is how I would coach you through this moment after an exhausting day when your bedtime is 10 pm, it’s 9:55 pm and you want to keep scrolling:

First, breathe. Get into your body.

Second, what is it that you’re trying to escape? Is it anxiety? Sadness? Something else? Name it.

FEEL that feeling. Describe it to me as if I were from outer space - is it in your chest?

Are you warm or cold? Is your thinking fast or slow? Is your throat tight or relaxed?

What are you FEELING in your body? Stay present. You’re ok. Really.

What if the worst thing that could happen… was a feeling?

Breathe again.

What if you didn’t need to escape this? What if you just let that uncomfortable feeling hang out without having to DO something to get rid of it?

What you’ll probably notice is it passes. That feeling is not forever.

If you can practice feeling uncomfortable, negative emotions in your body without needing to escape it, your tolerance for it will increase.

You’ll learn that you can FEEL hard things without reacting to it.

When you stop reacting out of fear of feeling a feeling…

…you can make better choices.

Like going to bed on time, planning your food for the week or getting out of bed and doing your workout.

Even if you don’t want to.

In my 6 month, 1-1 coaching program, developing lasting consistency with their health routines is one of the main things I help 6 & 7 figure entrepreneurs with when they want to devote more of their bandwidth to achieving optimal health, doubling their energy, and establishing a sustainable health routine that aligns with their busy lifestyle.

It was supposed to be a different post to you today, but I ended up spending the day in a volcano crater instead (for real!).

Sunday & Monday are my heavy creative focussed days - I make posts, I write newsletters, I outline podcasts etc.

But have you ever had one of those days where you got done HALF of what you planned...or less?

Yeah, that was yesterday for me.

I've worked with a ton of clients in my program, Becoming Limitless, that would continue work later than planned or jump back on their computer after the kids went to bed to finish up a few tasks.

(Perhaps this is you, too?)

If it is, this post will share how I coach my brain when doing MORE MORE MORE is all I want to do.

How I Intentionally Slow Down

I really wanted to spend this week sharing a few of my client stories.

I had this series of 5 or 6 posts planned and was so excited to tell you about the new way I'm getting my clients faster results.

But like I said, our family took Sunday off to spend the day in a volcano crater swimming in mountain pools, hanging out with pythons and buying fresh fruit from the Sunday market.

It was ok, I would get the posts done Monday.

But Monday went sideways. I got started an hour late and spent the afternoon analyzing and re-creating an Instagram ad instead of writing those posts.

5:28pm had rolled around.

Still working.

No posts written.

I could hear my brain screaming, "WRITE THEM, Tanessa. Keep working!"

I could also hear my kids playing in the pool outside and I told them I'd be there by 5:30.

I heard my brain negotiating:

Just write the first two.
Get up early every day and write them on the fly this week.
Do it after the kids go to sleep.
This is important!

But here is what I have learned over the last ten years in business: there is nothing that can't wait until tomorrow.

Who was putting this pressure on me to get this post series out THIS week? Me.

Who was the one telling me that I wasn't doing good enough and that I wasn't sticking to the plan? Me.

I'm the CEO of this company. Me. Not my noisy, chirpy brain.

So I told my brain I'm in charge. These posts are coming out next week instead.

Getting them done this week won't make me feel better or like I've done enough. Or more worthy. Or more successful, happy or valuable.

Only I get to decide that.

My productivity has NOTHING to do with my value as a human.

And at that moment, I didn't want to miss watching Hanna put her face in the water by herself for the first time.

I didn't want to miss slow evenings.

Getting high fives from Tenley every 5 minutes.
The sunset.
Sand in my toes.

Life is for living.

It's MY job to make sure I'm enjoying it.

So you'll get those posts next week.

Because right now, I've got a life to live and there is nothing that can't wait until tomorrow.
