Meet Barbara James (Ma̲lidzas) 🛠️
Red Seal Carpenter, BCIT alum, and now a Carpentry Instructor in our School of Construction and the Environment - Barbara brings community, culture, and care into everything she builds.

From sharing net-zero building knowledge with Indigenous communities to supporting students in the classroom, she leads by example - creating spaces grounded in respect, intention, and connection.

Her approach reflects how we show up at BCIT through the IDEAS Lens -building environments where people feel supported and can thrive.

This National Indigenous History Month, we’re proud to share her story.

This is what applied learning looks like. 👏🌲

BCIT’s Mass Timber Connections and Constructability Hub hit the road to Trail, BC, bringing hands-on mass timber training directly to Selkirk College learners.
Students worked through real construction and fabrication techniques - including rigging glulam beams, assembling structural components, and installing CLT panels.

A strong example of collaboration in action and the kind of training that helps grow BC’s sustainable construction workforce.
